Description of The Worst Witch (The Movie):
Based on Jill Murphy's book, this charming movie is set in an English boarding school for witches--complete with orange and black school uniforms, broom-flying exercises, and potion assignments for lab. The incompetent student of the title, Mildred, is played by a fetching young Fairuza Balk. Diana Rigg is the nasty head teacher, Tim Curry the (oddly) idolized Grand Wizard, and TV's Facts of Life maven Charlotte Rae does double duty as the school's kindly dean and her evil witch twin, who's bent on taking over the school. Directed by Robert Young, this 68-minute video features less than state-of-the-art effects and several songs that stop the action--most bizarrely an outdoor assembly performance by Curry that turns into a weird music video. Still, preteen girls will identify with the beleaguered heroine who overcomes her wickedly snooty rival, a teacher who doesn't believe in her, and a band of dastardly witches and, of course, saves the day. The Worst Witch (The Movie) Reviews:
Terrible quality...so-so story
2009-11-03 - I was looking for a cute show for a bunch of six and seven year old girls to watch at a Halloween Party. I purchased this quickly after reading the reviews. The kids were bored out of their minds! The quality is terrible (usually when older movies are brought to DVD they go through digital remastering, why didn't this??). There's a couple of cute songs, the acting is poor, the dialougue is boring and overall there's just not enough to keep kid's interest. If you think it was the kids fault's...I ended up turning on "Twitches" and they were laughing and completely mesmerized. I think this is best enjoyed by nostalgic adults that grew up with it as other reviewers have said (wish I would have kept that more in mind), but not so much for today's kids (honestly, TEN kids can't be wrong!).
Loved it as a Child, Love it as a Mom
2009-10-16 - I watched this as a child, teen, and young adult so many times that my VHS tape wore out. I even took it to college with me and would play it when I was sick. Needless to say I fished it out of the trash more than a few times as my roomies didn't share in my love for this pre-Potter witches school flivk. It is a great piece about an all girls school for witches. Needless to say the main character Mildred is struggling to be successful and fit in. It is an all around comeback kid movie with silly songs that sick in your head all year long. My kids love this and we watch it throughout the year. It is a must have movie for anyone looking to recapture the innocent days of movies made for kids that don't scare them to bits!
Memories
2009-09-27 - I bought this for my nieces, I remember it coming on tv every year around halloween when I was a kid. Way before Harry Potter. the girls love it.
Fun, clean movie for elementary school girls
2009-09-20 - This movie is cute, even though nowadays it would be an absolute flop at the box office. There are lots of good lessons about believing in yourself, even when things go wrong. The actors do a great job, and the special effects are a bit like traveling back in time. The picture quality wasn't very good--even the credits aren't a sharp image.
The Original HP
2009-09-03 - I was 7 years old when this movie came out and 23 years later, it's still stuck in my head! As a kid, the movie enabled my imagination to soar! It was the coolest movie and I loved it so much that I wanted to be a witch. Their school was so much more interesting than my public school, lol.
Horrible quality, poor graphics, but nevertheless a staple in any movie collection. It used to come on every Halloween and then it stopped. This is a great movie for children and will definitely get anyone in the mood for Halloween!!
