Cry Reviews:
If this song isn't "alt-", what is? 5 Star Review
2005-10-07 - I haven't heard much of the full album "Cry", and I'm far from the biggest fan of Faith Hill more generally. "This Kiss" and "Breathe" were each annoying in their respective ways. "The Way You Love Me" is a clever song with some cool couterpoint at the end. The more recent Faith seems very pretentious without interesting songs to back it up.

Taken on its own, however, "Cry" is one of the most excellent songs in recent memory, and I don't just mean in country music. The way that the voice stays just out of sync with the strong drums builds up just the right feeling of tamped-down rage. The bare lines at the end of the bridge ("I don't want pity; I just want what is mine.") lead to an explosion in the last chorus. As someone who listens to a lot of stuff classified as folk, indie-pop, or alt-country, I just don't expect this much ambition in songwriting from the major Country scene today. "Cry" is a nice exception that everyone should check out.

Enormously Under-rated 5 Star Review
2004-04-30 - I got the single back in Oct. of 2002, before "Cry" was released, and I was shocked at the new sound that Mrs. Hill was sporting. You could tell that she was branching out, and redrawing-if you will-the bounderies of country music. I've read alot of articles that say Shania Twain was the original "cross-over" pioneer for country, but I think that Faith has really done the job well. While Twain is hugely successful with her "two disc" sound, Hill has put everything she has into one "take it or leave it" amazing cd. The "B" tracks on the CRY single (Wicked, Shadows) show how much this artist has grown. Wicked has beautiful, single lines of poetry intertwined together to tell a heartfelt story, that I still haven't quite figured out! The poetry alone makes the song worth the price of the CD! But then it's set to a catchy, upbeat, country-rock sound that stays in your head for days! The second song, (Shadows) has to be one of my favorite songs of all times. It's the "If I Should Fall Behind" (Off 1999's "Breathe") of Hills new album. It's a song that tells a story of a pleading heart to a best friend/lover, saying "tell me the truth, it won't scare me, and no matter what, I'm here. I want to carry the pain with you". The song has so much meaning it's hard to sum it up in one line! And of course, we should talk about CRY. It seems on this single, "Cry" is left out of the reviews because of how wonderful the "B" tracks are! Cry is a wonderful song, a lover to another begging to see some more emotion, as proof that they still care. Angie Aparro did wonderful with this song, and was hugely under-rated with it. Faith Hill carries this torch well, and I'm certain Apparo is proud. I noticed that this single has a 5 star rating, that means everyone who has voted for it has given it a perfect score - so will you.

Need to be done at shows!!! 5 Star Review
2003-05-10 - Ok, I know that all the songs that dont make the cut for the records make it to live performances, but these two songs should be execptions!!! Wicked is one of the best, hauntingly creative songs I have ever heard before. Shadows is also haunting in a way that it speaks to you from someones soul. It shows that you need to find that specific person deep down inside and know everyone all around. "Don't judge a book by its cover" is the best way of explaining Shadows! Again, more fine work for the woman known as Faith Hill!!

Cry B-sides 5 Star Review
2003-05-04 - Faith Hill is getting a lot of slack for trying something different in career, and it's a shame, because her CRY album is actually a nice hybrid of different styles of music. Instead of making the same album every time she is willing to try new things. The title track was a mild hit with radio, almost cracking the top 10. The song is beautiful in its arrangement, and Faith handles the song convincingly, singing about wanting the other person in the relationship to show a little emotion. The real reason to buy this single is for the bsides from the album. "Wicked" is a mid-uptempo number with interesting lyrics and a nice melody. "Shadows" is a bluesy ballad, a beautiful love song. These songs are great but its obvious why they were not on the album, they just don't sound like "album" songs. Overall if you're a Faith Hill fan its worth the price to get this single for these bsides, they are great.

Simply Incredible 5 Star Review
2002-12-20 - I purchased this single for the non-album tracks and was not disappointed! "Cry" is a great album, and it's a shame the bonus songs here didn't make the final cut. Okay, this single is the same price as the album in many stores, but it's worth the price for "Shadows" alone. This is Faith at her best in a heartfelt ballad, very similar to "Stronger." "Wicked" is a mid-tempo song in the vein of "Unsaveable" and "If You're Gonna Fly Away."

These songs are a great addition to "Cry." I've recorded it all onto my hard drive and put "Wicked" after "Unsaveable" and "Shadows" after "Stronger." It only makes the album better!
