  • Editorial Review:
Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning keep pulses pounding and hearts racing in this chilling horror hit about a troubled father and daughter tormented by someone – or something – named Charlie, a malevolent entity who may or may not be "imaginary" but is definitely the stuff nightmares are made of!

Description of Hide and Seek (Widescreen Edition):
Dakota Fanning--the elfin star of Uptown Girls, The Cat in the Hat, and Man on Fire--trades in her blond locks for a semi-gothic brunette do in Hide and Seek. Fanning plays Emily, a young girl whose mother commits suicide. To help Emily through the trauma, her father David (Robert DeNiro), a psychologist, takes her to an isolated house in upstate New York. But instead of healing, Emily gets dark circles under her eyes, mutilates her favorite doll, and develops an imaginary friend named Charlie. In no time at all, things get spooky and David suspects this imaginary friend isn't so friendly. Hide and Seek owes a lot to The Shining, but whether the creepiness is borrowed or not, there's a decent dose of it (though the twist at the end is unlikely to surprise many viewers). DeNiro does his job with professional gloss, but Fanning carries the movie; she's got the kind of charisma that goes beyond acting ability--that ineffable glow that makes an audience want to watch her. Hide and Seek also features Famke Janssen (X-Men), Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas), and the ever-dependable Dylan Baker (Happiness). --Bret Fetzer

Hide and Seek (Widescreen Edition) Reviews:
Mild thriller plays games with its audience 2 Star Review
    2009-10-08 - HIDE AND SEEK

    (USA/Germany - 2005)

    Aspect ratio: 2.39:1 (Super 35)
Theatrical soundtracks: Dolby Digital / DTS / SDDS

Following his wife's tragic death, a New York psychologist (Robert DeNiro) takes his 9 year old daughter (Dakota Fanning) and relocates to a remote house in the country, where the little girl acquires an 'imaginary friend' who seems intent on ruining her father's life.

Mild, inconsequential thriller in which DeNiro's widowed protagonist engages in psychological conflict with a rebellious child who appears to blame him for the loss of her mother. Perhaps because it IS so mild, the climactic revelations aren't nearly as shocking as director John Polson and screenwriter Ari Schlossberg might have hoped, and the narrative builds to a lacklustre conclusion. DeNiro is miscast as the 'saintly' psychologist who tolerates his daughter's worst excesses, and the glossy production values are wasted. Also starring Famke Janssen as a fellow psychologist, and a virtually unrecognizable Amy Irving as DeNiro's ill-fated wife. Casual viewers will get their money's worth, but die-hard horror fans are urged to look elsewhere.

Who is Charlie??? Bet you will be wondering. 5 Star Review
2009-10-05 - This is a great horror film and it's not cheesy like most similar types of movies. I don't want to say anything to give the movie away so I will make it short. I have to say this is one of the most unpredictable movies that I have ever seen. Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning were both very believable characters. I bet you can't predict the ending! I would highly recommend this movie.

Pretty good film, with a twist... 4 Star Review
2009-08-12 - I won't go into details of what most people have already read abot the plot of this film. I just recently watched this film, which I now own in my collection, and felt it was a good film. De Niro and Fanning give good performances, especially Fanning who gave a very good, and creepy performance... De Niro gives another excellent performance, as usual.

This film will keep you guessing, and has, at least for me a hell of a plot twist ending when we finally discover who "Charlie" really is... Even I thought there was some supernatural plot line involved, but was blown away by the twist.

This is a creepy little film, that has 4 alternate endings as well as the original release... I say this is a must see film... especially for De Niro and Fanning fans... Enjoy!

Cheap Price, On Time, Great Product 5 Star Review
2008-11-17 - My title explains it all.... I have no complaints. Truly, everything was above the satisfactory level!!!!!!!

Not worth the time or effort 1 Star Review
2008-08-05 - This film is blatanly obvious. There is no real suspense or mystery surrounding the plot. It's quite a shame that Robert De Niro would be involved in something like this. Dakota Fanning is a wonderful actress for her age and this film does not do her justice. It is a shame, really. This film does not scare, thrill or satisfy. I would stay away if you have not already watched it.
