Fiona Apple's music doesn't appeal to everyone, but her rendering of the Beatles classic "Across the Universe" is quite lovely, both vocally and production-wise. Apple also does a version of Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love," which is similarly well-produced and flushed out with vibraphone and chamberlain. The rest of the soundtrack consists of a nonoffensive sampling of '50s hits and a few jazz standards. "Rave On" by Buddy Holly and the Crickets and "Teddy Bear (Let Me Be Your)" by Elvis Presley keep the show moving, while "Take Five" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet and "So What" by Miles Davis round the collection out. Randy Newman scored the film, and his "Suite from Pleasantville" is typically great. Here's hoping it's released in its expanded form on its own. --Aaron Tassano

2006-07-09 - Nice selection of music from a charmingly entertaining, idiosyncratic movie. Aside from an eclectic selection of golden oldies the film also showcases the talents of a kittenish Reese Witherspoon and an earnest, albeit nerdy, Toby Maguire. Even an aged Don Knotts makes an appearance as the clairvoyant television repairman who provides access through the looking glass into "Pleasantville." It's reassuring to know that even in an alternate universe the music is this good.

2006-05-26 - I bought this for Fiona Apple's "Across the Universe" and wound up loving every single song. This movie was great and its soundtrack was even better.

2004-08-01 - I saw the movie and absolutely adored it. I havent bought the soundtrack..yet. Can anyone tell me what the name of the song that is played at the end of the movie during the credits, and who sings it? Is it on the soundtrack?

2004-04-02 - Great 50's hits like Rave On by Jerry Lee Lewis, Teddy Bear by Elvis, jazz standards like "At Last" by Etta James, and A KICKIN RENDITION of The Beatle's "Across The Universe" PLUS a song that wasn't in the film, the standard, "Send Me Someone To Love" by Fiona Apple! If you like a mix of music or love Fiona Apple this is a must own! The movie just ROCKS also, and the DVD version has the video to "Across The Universe" with Ms. Apple. Excellent! Happy Listening!
