English Rose Reviews:
SCARY GOOD ALBUM
2009-10-13 - This is essentially the U.S. release of the Mr Wonderful album, with Danny Kirwin added and some other studio cuts.
On this album, the potential of Danny Kirwin as envisioned and appreciated by Peter Green -comes through. Jigsaw Puzzle Blues is imaginative and unique- VERY nice. Something Inside Of Me is another Kirwin song worth note and high praise. Peter Green has two notable inclusions on the US album, and they are approaching his genius being fully revealed.
"Black Magic Woman "- for my money -his solo in this is the most subtle- yet brilliant phrasing done by anybody. This is played as it should be -a blues song that is lush in so so many ways. The other notable is "Albatross"- a dreamy instumental with Fleetwood setting the oceanic mood. This was a huge hit in England. As I recall there was another song on the original release of this album- the Little Willy John song- I Need Your Love So Bad- again- the tone of the guitar-the great vocal and the over all presentation is filled with emotion ( somebody decided to add strings- which it really did not need- but they can't take away from Green and his passion)- most of the other tunes where on Mr Wonderful, or some added somewhat pleasant Kirwin tunes.Over all- Highly Recommended.
The Mac Show Their First Steps Of Progression
2009-08-05 - Fleewood Mac's album "English Rose" was released by Epic Records in January of 1969. It was their second U.S. album whereas their second album in the U.K. was "Mr. Wonderful" released by Blue Horizon in August of 1968. "English Rose" was more or less a reworked version of "Mr. Wonderful" but showcased the band's sudden progression by including songs by the band's newly added lead guitarist Daniel Kirwan. "Mr. Wonderful," on the other hand, was basically a continuation of the band's debut with the same Chicago influenced blues only with a horn section and some added keyboard work from a one Christine Perfect from Chicken Shack. "English Rose" mixed it up a bit more. Here's a rundown of the track listing for "English Rose" and their original sources.
SIDE ONE:
1. Stop Messin' Round (the opening track for U.K. album "Mr. Wonderful" released 8/68)
2. Jigsaw Puzzle Blues (B-side to "Albatross," released 11/68 in U.K., and 1/69 in U.S.)
3. Doctor Brown (from "Mr. Wonderful")
4. Something Inside Of Me (first released on "English Rose")
5. Evenin' Boogie ("Mr. Wonderful")
6. Love That Burns ("Mr. Wonderful")
SIDE TWO:
1. Black Magic Woman (single A-side released 3/68 in U.K., and 6/68 in U.S.)
2. I've Lost My Baby ("Mr. Wonderful")
3. One Sunny Day (first released on "English Rose" in U.S., to be issued on U.K. version of "Then Play On" 9/69)
4. Without You (see "One Sunny Day")
5. Coming Home ("Mr. Wonderful")
6. Albatross (A-side of "Jigsaw Puzzle Blues")
I love "English Rose" in the same way I like the U.S. versions of albums by The Beatles. In a sense that I think the label compiled album presented a better picture of the band's progression than that of the original U.K. counterparts. I think "English Rose" is the best purchase someone can make to sample the blues era of Fleetwood Mac. After this, things got REALLY good.
One of the best
2009-06-24 - This is probably the last Fleetwood Mac album that has any lasting merit IMHO. This album marked a sort of turning point for the band. Peter Greene is here in full effect, so this is a must buy!
English Rose
2009-06-10 - It took far to long to reach its destination ,it was a gift and it ended up being a project. You need to ship UPS or Fed EX so you can track items.Ground is cheaper than US Postal service.
