Description of Mirage:
The party was pretty much over for Fleetwood Mac by 1982; the blockbuster pop classics Fleetwood Mac and Rumors were mid-1970s memories, 1979's Tusk had been a grand experiment but a commercial bust, and Stevie Nicks had already launched a solo career. Still, that didn't mean Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Christine McVie couldn't continue to write engaging, appealing pop in their sleep. Mirage has a handful of high points any Mac fan would appreciate, from Buckingham's soulful "Book of Love" to Nicks's twirl-inducing "Gypsy" to McVie's catchy "Love in Store." Overall, the Mac's magic touch seems usurped by a band merely going through the motions--but those motions still resulted in a few worthwhile moments. --Peter Blackstock
Mirage Reviews:
Sounds like summer.
2009-09-12 - This is the first Mac album I bought. Lord knows why, but 'Rumours' somehow passed me by at the time (I have it now, of course.) and I was drawn to this album by the enchanting lead single, 'Hold On'.
It was a wonderful surprise when I got it. I knew little of Fleetwood Mac or any of it's members and the fact that the album flows so well with so many diverse talents is a great achievement.
I've read since that Stevie Nicks, who was enjoying a very successful solo career at the time, was reluctant to reform and didn't want to use her best songs for the project. I suppose that's understandable (if it's true) but it shows how on-form Nicks was if tracks as good as 'Gypsy', 'Straight Back' and That's Alright' weren't considered strong enough for her solo stuff.
The collection is beautifully produced and whilst I agree with another reviewer that the album is more about craft than emotion, not a criticism, in any way, I have to say I still adore it 27 years on. It just sounds like summer to me, I don't know why.
One slight whinge, though. 'Fleetwood Mac', 'Rumours' and 'Tusk' were given the deluxe treatment 5 years ago. A great job they did, too. So when will 'Mirage' and 1987's 'Tango In The Night' (something of a sister album to 'Mirage', I feel) get the same deal? 'Mirage' doesn't sound bad, it's too well recorded and produced for that. But it could use a remaster and with the added incentive of bonus material it could delight a whole new generation of potential fans. It's certainly worth reappraisal in 2009.
Mirage - Fleetwood Mac
2009-05-11 - Fleetwood Mac's 1982 effort brought them back to the top of the charts after the disappointment with the sales of 1979's Tusk. The break in between Tusk and Mirage allowed the members to pursue other projects. Lindsey Buckingham released a solo album and Stevie Nicks did the same. It was Stevie who had the most success with her solo outing. Mirage seems to pull the group back into top form. The album yielded three hit singles. Christine McVie's "Love In Store," Stevie's "Gypsy," and Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie singing together on "Hold Me." This album allowed the band to dive into the MTV generation with the videos for "Hold Me" and "Gypsy." "Gypsy" is probably one of the bands greatest music videos. They really adapted to the new form and managed to make it their own. Mirage has a very mystical feel about it. It brings us back to the good old days of 1977's Rumours. The album doesn't really contain any duds. Some songs did seem stronger than others. Nicks' "Straight Back" doesn't seem to measure up to her other contributions. It's also easy to dismiss McVie's "Wish You Were Here."
Mirage still comes out as a strong record. It went to #1 on the charts and is my favorite Fleetwood Mac album.

Reunion With an Treasured Song from the Past
2008-02-29 - It's been a long time since I listened to music from an audio CD. It's always mp3-this, mp3-that. This audio CD is like a breeze of fresh cool air. If I can give more than 5 stars I would.
Here's how I came to know about this album, Mirage. Back in 1986 (how long ago was that?) I recorded on tape a music I heard on the radio. I loved it. But I didnt know the title nor the artist. All I remembered were the words, wish you were here and the fine melody. Soon after I lost that tape and never seem to hear the song played on the radio again. But I never forgot how beautiful and relaxing it was even with my crappy recording.
Fast forward to 2008, I decided to seriously look for it using the magic of Google. I searched for "wish you were here." Google returned mostly with a rock band Pink Floyd. I knew it wasnt the one. Finally I got a link to a band called Fleetwood Mac and with the aid of Amazon preview I confirmed that my song was in their album, Mirage! Wish You Were Here is still so beautiful! It is as captivating today as it was before. The other songs are all very good too!
I don't know much about Fleetwood Mac, but if this album is any indication, I think they are a talented gifted band. Their music is clean and neat sounding. Disciplined even. I highly recommend Mirage!
Fleetwood Mac's hit-filled Mirage!
2007-06-13 - This is the first Fleetwood Mac album of the 1980's and the fourth with American latecomers Lindsey Buckingham and Stephanie Lynn "Stevie" Nicks still in the band. After success with FLEETWOOD MAC,the Grammy-winning RUMOURS and TUSK,the band would perform hits like HOLD ME,GYPSY and LOVE IN STORE in music videos during the early days of MTV. The aforementioned songs later appeared on GREATEST HITS(LIS was not part of GH) and THE VERY BEST OF FLEETWOOD MAC. After this album,FM did not disband but did take a five-year hiatus, giving Nicks,Buckingham and bassist John's now-ex-wife Christine Perfect McVie the opportunity to carry on with solo careers. Before this album,Nicks' and Buckingham's began, but afterward CPM scored with her 1984 solo debut hit GOT A HOLD ON ME.
