Editorial Review:
The temptation is to compare this version of Fleetwood Mac with the multiplatinum quintet that peaked in the '70s and then made a triumphant return in 1997. But there've been some half dozen versions of Mac over the last 28 years, some significantly more memorable than others. This 1995 lineup isn't likely to make anyone forget Rumours. Three stalwart members--Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie--are back, joined by 10-year Mac vet Billy Burnette and short-term members Bekka Bramlett (the daughter of first generation Mac contemporaries Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett) and journeyman rocker Dave Mason. The spotlight inevitably shines brightest upon McVie, who responds with four songs that are never less, or more, than pleasant. For their part, Burnette, Bramlett, and Mason check in with mostly nondescript contributions. --Steven Stolder
Time Reviews:
A VALID ENTRY
2009-11-11 - I fear that "Time" is a highly over looked FM album--and it shouldn't be. I saw Mick and his band Mick Fleetwood's Zoo years ago in St. Louis and with Beka at the forefront, they were great. I only wish that I could find the Zoo's CD!!! This album is sort of a sample of what might/could have been had Miss Bramlet been on the scene longer. I rate this album 5 stars for its super sound and its place in FM history. Peace & Love
The saddest thing I ever heard...
2009-01-29 - I have to admit up front that it was "Rumours" that pulled me into the world of Fleetwood Mac way back in 1976. I've been a die-hard fan ever since... even of the earlier work pre-Nicks/Buckingham. I've seen every tour since "Rumours", too. Every tour except "Time"...
Aside from Christine McVie's contributions and those of Billy Burnette, which were the only saving graces here, "Time" sucked. I tried very hard to enjoy this album when it first came out... even stepping away from being a fan and listening from the perspective of being a musician myself. Still couldn't find anything to redeem it, save for Christine and Billy.
That this album followed "Behind The Mask" only highlights how much this group fell apart after the departures of first Buckingham, then Nicks and Vito. "Behind The Mask" is infinitely more representative of Fleetwood Mac than "Time" is, and exhibits much more cohesion as a band... and much more flow as an album. Little wonder that this album was a huge commercial flop, and the supporting tour was cut short due to lack of ticket sales. And that, truly, is a shame.
One of the things that really annoyed me on this album was Bekka. I'm sure she's a fine vocalist on her own, but in the context of Fleetwood Mac, her voice came across sounding more like Dolly Parton on helium, than a voice you'd want to hear on a Fleetwood Mac album. Sorry Dolly, I love your music too... but that's the only way I can describe this. There was no harmonic resonance to Bekka's performance here. In fact, there was no harmony... period... where she was concerned. She irritated my musical ear much as a mosquito buzzing in the still of the night around your bed would. I really hate to say that, because I have loved her mom's voice since my childhood, but I have to be honest.
So, for those who have enjoyed Fleetwood Mac's other incarnations leading up to the release of "Time", before you buy this album be sure to listen to the clips with the volume UP and consider buying the MP3 versions of the McVie/Burnette tracks if you like them. That's much better to do than to purchase this as I did when it was first released, without having heard any of the tracks, only to give it a listen or two and toss it into the "never listen to again" pile. If you want to hear the Mac at their best, try any of the albums leading up to "Time", or any that came after it... and chalk this album up to what it really is... a sad mistake.
Stevie Nicks is Fleetwood Mac PERIOD
2008-11-12 - Don't make the mistake I made and buy this CD thinking it is Fleetwood Mac. This CD is not Fleetwood Mac as it does not have Stevie Nicks on it. I guess Mick Fleetwood and McVies were desperate for some money and tried to cash in on the legend that Stevie Nicks created. If you are like most Fleetwood Mac fans when you listen to a Fleetwood Mac CD you press the "next" button every time a song that is not sung by Nicks comes up. No Nicks, no Mac. It is as simple as that.
not worthy the fleetwood mac brand
2008-09-24 - this came at an odd time. in fact i didnt hear about it for five years or more and my mac friends said stay away! no stevie nicks. but i've heard its good so i had to make up my own mind. i put it on last night. theres an odd trippy laziness to the whole project. this project was 8 years since lindsey left and they had to replace him with two other guitarists for a 1990 album which didnt do so well. then stevie left to do her own thing.christine was still on board but even though she had written some of her best work from 87 thru 92 you'd be hard pressed to hear it here. nites on estoril could be pretty but it sounds like the drug they must have all taken to make such sleepy time music. bringing in veteran dave mason didnt help much. billy burnett the one guitarist hold out from 90 still tries mining the country rock sound to no great effect and great singer bekka bramlett is lost in so so songs. there are some pretty moments but i found the last song the most interesting. it had the loveliest melody with mick doing a spoken word. this just does not fit in the fleetwood mac scheme of things since 75. oh well.
Good album even without Buckingham/Nicks
2008-08-10 - Mick Fleetwood and Christine and John McVie are joined by Dave Mason, Bekka Bramlett and Billy Burnette on this album made without Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Stevie Nicks is one of my favorite Fleetwood Mac members but "Time" is surprisingly good even without her and Buckingham.
Bekka Bramlett is a great singer and sings one of the catchiest songs on the album, "Winds of Change", which might have had a chance to chart if it were released as a a single. I always love hearing Christine McVie's voice and her material here is good as usual (I was going to write "not up to her usual standards", but after another careful listen I realized there are several good songs here).
Favorite tracks: Winds of Change, I Wonder Why, Nights in Estoril: Least favorite: Dreamin' the Dream.
Overall, "Time" is a good album and the group works surprisingly well without Buckingham/Nicks. Those who want to hear more of Bekka Bramlett and Billy Burnette may also want to check out their country album "Bekka & Billy".
