Editorial Review:
After losing everything, a young fish, Pi, goes to live with his family on the Reef. There he meets the love of his life but finds that she already has the unwanted affections of a bully shark. He must follow his destiny to save her and rid the Reef of this menace for good.
Description of The Reef:
The story of a young fish who suffers a great loss and moves to a new town where he falls in love with a beautiful fish and angers the resident shark bully, The Reef (initially known as Shark Bait) is a beautifully computer animated film with striking similarities to Finding Nemo and Shark Tale. The first Hollywood feature-length, all computer generated film ever made in Korea, The Reef won the Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence and is a great display of saturated colors, nice underwater detailing, and anthropomorphic animation that endows every fish with an abundance of character while retaining its believability as a fish. The voice talent is good and includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Pi, Evan Rachel Wood as Cordelia, Fran Drescher as Pearl, Donal Logue as Troy, and Rob Schneider as a variety of sea creatures including Nerissa. The story is engaging, but the whole film watches like a Finding Nemo knock-off with scenes like the pelican bobbing on the channel marker, the Portuguese Man of War that populate the West Indies current, and the wise old turtle Nerissa who teaches Pi so much about the ways of the sea. Similarities to Shark Tale also abound, the most obvious being one little fish's determination to stand up to the big bully shark. Appropriate for ages 3 and older, although the initial scene where Pi's mother and father are caught in a fishing net may prove upsetting to very young or sensitive children. --Tami Horiuchi
The Reef Reviews:
The reef
2009-05-10 - I mpurchased this video for my grandkids ages 8 mon to 3 years. They watch the movie over and over. A great buy.
Great to pass off the afternoon
2009-04-06 - Got this under 10$ and im glad i bought it. Some reviewers hate it cause
it looks like other movies. Ive seen all other movies like Shark's take and
nemo...but when you like a movie, you want to see more of it...so this
movie is like a extension of other movies that i like... Cant lose with
this deal.
Anyway i enjoyed the reef, and cant wait for more computer animated movies.
So much better than Nemo
2008-11-28 - We bought this dvd for our 3 year old and he dearly loves it. It even held our attention. Given the choice of watching Finding Nemo or The Reef, he gladly chooses the Reef. This is a prime example just because a movie is heavily advertised doesn't mean it's a good one. We never saw any ads for the Reef but are so glad we came across it in the store!
Predictable
2008-05-26 - Predictable, not really, there is still a lot of suspense. This movie is geared for children, yet it captivated me, a 40 year old. I liked it so much that I actually bought it, and I buy very few movies. This movie has some absolutely beautiful graphics and a very heart warming plot.
My 11 year old absolutely loved it. She saw it several month ago and everytime we run across it in the rental store she still asks to rent it again. I can only recommend this cd. It is good solid childrens entertainment.
Not for young, young kids unless you skip the begining
2008-03-30 - The was the first film which made my 2 year-old cry. At the begining of the film you meet the parents in the sludge of Boston, talking about moving to the reef. Then the net comes and gets all of them, mother, father, and child. The child escapes but the mother and father are dragged away in the net leaving the child crying "mom, dad..." and then he is sad for for a while while traveling to the reef with a bunch of porpoises. Seeing the parents carried off was too visual with crying out over and over, and didn't have to be part of the film at all. How about the parent decide to move and they all go there? It wouldn't have changed the rest off the movie at all. My 12 year-old, husband, and I didn't like that they had to put this strife in and it, and in a really upsetting way. It didn't seem to fit with the rest of the film other than traveling with the porpoises but they all could have traveled with the porpoises. Later having it said that, your parents are sushi now kid, didn't help with me liking this film. Luckily this is way over most kids heads
This was not done as well as "Shark Tale" animation wise or story wise. It cannot even be compared to "Finding Nemo". The story after the parents demise was OK, and just that. Predictable but children may like it. Parent won't.
