Editorial Review:
The pop Christmas album is a lost art everywhere but in the country-western arena. You don't see today's rock acts reeling off sets of religious standards the way you used to--which is probably for the best. But even within the whole country milieu, since album release schedules aren't as fast-paced and casual as they once were, a good seasonal CD is something to latch onto. What we have here is a Christmas album of solid construction, packed with traditional songs and old-Nashville chestnuts. No surprises and no smash hits, but that's not what it's about. --Gavin McNett

Beyond the Season Reviews:
Garth in top form 5 Star Review
2009-09-08 - Recorded at a time when Garth was the hottest star in any type of music in America, this album contains an excellent mix of songs, some of them being very familiar, some of them being covers of obscure songs and some of them being (at the time) completely new. Garth stuck firmly to the style of his other music, so anybody familiar with it knows what to expect.

The most familiar songs here are Silent night, White Christmas, What child is this, God rest ye merry gentlemen and Go tell it on the mountain, all of which Garth performs superbly. At the of Silent night, Garth adds a nice touch by narrating a story about his favorite Christmas (1987) while the melody continues.

The other songs include a Buck Owens classic (Santa looked a lot like Daddy) that should be familiar to country music fans as several other country singers have covered it for their own Christmas albums. Pop music fans who don't normally listen to country music, but who are nevertheless attracted to Garth's music, have probably not heard this song elsewhere.

A traditional song that is rarely heard these days (The friendly beasts) makes a most welcome appearance here. There are two original songs, one of which (Unto you this night) I haven't heard elsewhere, but the other (The gift) has been covered by other singers including Ireland's Daniel O'Donnell.

If you enjoy Garth's other music, you should enjoy this excellent Christmas album.

Christmas Music at it's best 5 Star Review
2008-12-16 - Now, there are a bunch of Christmas songs out there, and given the merchants starting to play piped in carols the day after Halloween, is it any wonder we're all out of the spirit of the season by Dec. 25? But put this cd on and relax amid the paper and ribbons, watch the fire and just try not to cry when 'The Gift' comes on. I originally had the tape and wore that out just about the time the cd came out. I've gone through 3 and this last one is NOT getting loaned out! His voice is not forced on tunes and he lets the songs speak their own message. Someone said this was a scary album?! I only know I've played this for a good 12 years, and my nephews (who hate country, 15 & 18) love this album and will search through the stack until they find this one and play it. They've loved it since they were little and we always scream along with 'Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy'. My taste in music is eclectic, to say the least. But this is in the regular rotation with the Judds, George Strait, Randy Travis, Michael Buble, Keb Mo, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Peggy Lee, Dwight Yoakum and Roy Clark---all Christmas Offerings I never tire of listening to. The price on this CD is steep, but you can find cheaper versions or better--borrow from the Library for free and see if you love it as much as I do. Merry and Joyful Christmas to all!

My Favorite 5 Star Review
2008-11-08 - I like Garth very much and I LOVE this Christmas CD. The songs are thoughtful and moving. It's a good mix of traditional Christmas tunes with less known gems like The Gift. This is my go-to Christmas music when the holidays roll around.

Merry Christmas Garth 5 Star Review
2008-05-02 - Fantastic CD. I lost my original after several and HAD to buy another coper and would do it again. Songs are great.

one great Christmas cd! 5 Star Review
2007-12-23 - This is one of my favorite Christmas cd's. Garth brings out the magic and glory of the Christmas Season in a big way! He brings forth traditional carols like "Go Tell It On The Mountain", "Silent Night", and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", along with ones not heard much before that are sure classics to me. He tells the beautiful Christmas story in "Unto You This Night". In the song "The Gift" which has been done before, he sings about an orphan girl who brings an injured bird in a cage as a gift to the Baby Jesus, to lay by the manger scene of a church on Christmas Eve , and "The Friendly Beasts", which is really a sweet song about the various animals in the stable on that Divine night 2000 years ago when Jesus our Savior was born. It's made to sound like the animals are singing the song, about Jesus, Joseph, and Mary. I prefer this Christmas cd to his other one, "Garth Brooks and the Magic of Christmas", which sounds too jazzy to me.

I highly recommend "Beyond the Season"! It's a must for anyone's Christmas music collection.
