Editorial Review:
This mega-budget action epic flopped at the box office with a resounding thud, and it probably deserved that fate for not living up to its lavish potential. But Cutthroat Island has had a healthy shelf life on video, and digital video disc can only improve the film's potential as a spectacular guilty pleasure. Geena Davis plays Morgan, the swashbuckling daughter of an aging buccaneer who inherits one-third of a map to a secret pirate treasure. But the map is in Latin, and she needs a lowdown thief and scoundrel (and presumably a Latin scholar), played by Matthew Modine, to translate the map when they obtain the other two pieces. That's when the mayhem begins and the dashing duo race for the treasure against Morgan's scheming uncle (Frank Langella) and a hoard of greedy pirates. With wall-to-wall action ably handled by Davis's then-husband Renny Harlin, Cutthroat Island is more fun than its box-office performance would indicate. --Jeff Shannon
Cutthroat Island Reviews:
GREAT MOVIE ENJOYMENT
2008-10-05 -
This must be my weekend for pirate movies, first THE SPANISH MAIN and now CUTTHROAT ISLAND. This DVD has been selling recently at mark down prices at WalMart but did not buy a copy. However when one of the cable movie channels had it on I decided to skip a pro-football game to watch.
I was rewarded with an action packed, non stop explosive movie filled with great acting and great special effects. The actual location scenes were very good also, plus the monkey is great too. The plot involves finding three pieces to a complete map which will lead the seeker to gold beyond the imagining, wealth beyond belief. Two hours later one group does find the wealth on Cutthoat Island.
I came of age in the 1950s when a few pirate movies were yet being made and have to say CUTTHROAT ISLAND resembles some of the better ones made in the '50s. In fact, as my review of THE SPANISH MAIN will indicate, this movie CUTTHROAT ISLAND is to my judgment much better than THE SPANISH MAIN. Its action predominates over plot but it is also a much more enjoyable movie.
For a couple hour's watching this movie is just fine.
Semper Fi.
Better than Jack Sparrow
2008-07-02 - This is a great action packed movie that I enjoyed more than Pirates of the Carribian series. I mean come on they took the monkey from this movie and put it in theirs. If you love pirate movies you won't be disappointed.
Great family action film
2008-06-06 - As a mother of two preteen sons who are pirate crazy, I have to say this film was a great alternative to the Pirates of the Caribbean or other pirate movies that are PG13. Film has a few sensual moments but not nearly the level of sexual innuendo found in other films. Tons of action from start to finish, and Geena Davis plays a strong woman character. For the amount of pirate fighting there was hardly any blood shown. I had no problem with this film and the kids LOVED it.
Geena Davis Superstar
2008-03-29 - This is a sleeper big budget blockbuster with Geena Davis showing that she can carry a film like few other female stars. Although it was panned by the critics, Reggie Harlin, can deliver thrills and spills with the best of them. Highly recommended, especially for those Davis fans.
very enjoyable
2008-03-23 - I see from other reviewers that we go from on star to five. the one star is mad a repackaging and five star for the movie. This is why it is hard for the average person to read a review for buying the movie. I loved the movie and Miss Davis was great. The whole movie was wonderful as I watched it for the third time. My advise is to buy it. It is a wild ride that moves to the end and I give it a five star, because I loved it.
