Editorial Review:
An epic film that "re-creates in stunning detail one of the most disastrous battles of World War II" (The Hollywood Reporter), A Bridge Too Far is a spectacular war picture. Painstakingly recreated on actual battlefield locations and boasting a remarkable cast that includes Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Sir Laurence Olivier and Robert Redford, A Bridge Too Far accurately recaptures the monumental scope, excitement and danger behind one of the biggest military gambles in history. In September 1944, flush with success after the Normandy Invasion, the Allies confidently launched Operation Market Garden, a wild scheme intended to put an early end to the fighting by invading Germany and smashing the Reich's war plants. But a combination of battlefield politics, faulty intelligence, bad luck and even worse weather led to disaster beyond the Allies' darkest fears.
Description of A Bridge Too Far:
This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane
A Bridge Too Far Reviews:
Great HD transfer!
2009-12-17 - Really enjoyed the movie and Blu-Ray transfer was top-notch! Was hoping for more supplemental material! only trailers included! But for the price great deal!
A Great Classic War Movie
2009-12-16 - An excellent movie to watch over and over again. Blue-Ray quality isn't at its best, picture looks faded and lack of contrast. If you already have the DVD copy, don't need to buy again.
great buy
2009-12-16 - Overall a great price for a blu-ray and a classic movie. The fact that the editing of the film differs from others had little impact on the purchase. Would be happy to purchase again.
An intense, historically accurate war film
2009-11-26 - This was an ambitious film that succeeds in its mission of entertaining the viewer, but does not quite make it into the top-tier of war films. Operation Market-Garden was conceived by General Montgomery as an attempt to drive a nail into the coffin of the German Wehrmacht, and take the allies to the Rhine. Instead, the operation failed and remains controversial to this day. James Caan and Sean Connery in particular turn in excellent performances among an all-star cast.
I suppose what deprives this film of its fifth star is the simple fact that (in my opinion) it has a bit too much action and not enough characterization and storyline. There is just a lot of combat in this film, which is, after all to be expected. And the action somewhat swamps the storyline. Nevertheless, this is an excellent film that war-film buffs will enjoy more than once. RJB.
A Bridge to Far
2009-10-26 - I just returned from Nijmegen Netherlands; we attended several memorial celebrations all over the area in honor of 65 years of freedom from the Nazi invasion. I decided to watch this movie, it was excellent. God bless America and thank you GI's!
