Editorial Review: Island of Hope - Island of Tears is shown daily to the public at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum located off the coast of Battery Park, New York. An expanded version of the film, Journey to America, can be seen on PBS through the American Experience series. Island of Hope - Island of Tears is the story of Ellis Island and a tribute to the over 18 million immigrants who journeyed to America in search of freedom and opportunity. Fleeing political unrest, joblessness, poverty, or persecution, these immigrants arrived from every country in Europe and the Caribbean. For them, Ellis Island symbolized the gateway to freedom or the place from which they could be turned back. Between 1890 and 1924 these men, women and children traveled the waters of the Atlantic Ocean to pass through the great immigration station at Ellis Island, marking the largest migration influx in human history. Today, almost half of all living Americans can trace an ancestor who shared that experience. Island of Hope - Island of Tears dramatically tells these immigrants stories as they bravely faced the unknown, from the time they left their homelands to the moment the doors of Ellis opened, revealing the great promise of America. | |||||||||||||||||||||
