After more than 20 years and 30-plus albums, George Strait might be entitled to cruise through a CD or two. But after the sublime "She'll Leave You with a Smile" hit the benchmark of 50 No. 1 country singles, the crisply starched Texan went on to make one of the most satisfying albums of his career. Honkytonkville finds him sitting a little taller on the barstool than his last efforts, more concerned with the kind of romantic disappointment that hurts too much for middle-of-the road leanings and requires more of a sawdust-on-the-floor environment. Jim Lauderdale's "She Used to Say That to Me" kicks things off with 100-proof hillbilly angst, and from there Strait serves up some pretty strong stuff: the exquisite heartbreak ballad "Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa," the rollicking "I Found Jesus on the Jailhouse Floor," and the George Jones-style novelty romp, "Honk If You Honky Tonk." Strait’s session players--Matt Rollings on organ and Paul Franklin on steel guitar, for example--fill the space around his elegant vocals with taste and grace, supplying an audible teardrop and an anguished sigh. It all adds up to a nearly perfect album from a justifiable king of modern country. --Alanna Nash

2009-01-17 - Everybody knows that George Strait is a master craftsman - and has been for many years. He may not be the best "singer", but he is certainly one of the best "phrasers" in the country music fraternity. His relaxed, laid back approach is perfectly married to The Song. This must surely be one of his finest albums of the 2000s; certainly up there with The Road Less Travelled and It Just Comes Natural. "Cowboys Like Us" and the driving "Honk If You Honky Tonk" could almost be career anthems, while the ballad "Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa", is probably the vocal highlight of the album, as his slow, soulful voice simply shines. "As Far As It Goes" is veering towards Country-Pop, but not quite, and "I Found Jesus On the Jailhouse Floor" is the other side of the coin, a honky tonk shuffle which, thematically, is not unlike an alternative angle to Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried". However, the only weaker track, for me, is "Look Who's Back from Town". But even that gets better with each listen. It is, as such, a darn good album. I was blown away continually and was almost getting giddy by the time I reached "Four Down and Twelve Across" and the album's postscript, the gentle "My Infinite Love". Not for the last time, George Strait demonstrates why he isn't just a living legend - and, by definition, is more than a mere star - he shows why he is George Strait.

George Doesn't Disappoint~
2006-04-17 - This is my first George Strait CD suggested by a close friend that enjoys "Cowboy's Like Us". Here's a thought are there others of you that believe this song relates to riding your motorcycle...but of course? Great song!
'Infinite Love', 'Desparately' and 'Heaven's Missing'An Angel are all faves, just to name a few.

2006-04-12 - I have always enjoyed listening to a George Strait song on the radio. When Honkytonville first came out, I snapped it up and have continued to enjoy all the tracks! Thanks George!

2005-09-21 - In all of george's cd's I have at least one favorite song. On Honkytonkville,I have two - "Cowboy's like us",which I fell in love w/the moment I heard it,& "My infinate love".George is the greatest cowboy around and he still does'nt dissopoint.Honkytonkville is indeed one to add to the ol jukebox of collections.
