Godsmack - Changes Reviews:
My favorite concert video
2009-09-29 - I would have to say that this is far and away my favotite concert video. After reading some reviews I have to wonder what they were watching and listening to. First of all, yes this is a documentary/concert. Why watch the documentary every time it goes into the DVD player. Just go to the main menu and select "songs". All of the documentary portion will be skipped over and you have a full length concert. The only problem is that there will be a short pause between tracks as the DVD searches for the next, but none of the tracks are cut short. Voodoo is played in its entirety.
Now on to the show itself. AWESOME. It is hard to pick a favorite track, but if I had to it would be the drum duel between Sully and Shannon. What I like about this so much is that the entire band is involved. Watching those two trade off drum fills is incredible. More entertaining that watching the master Neil Peart.
Serenity is also an incredible track doing it all acoustic. Re-align? Fuget-about-it. Amazing. There is not a bad track on this DVD. Audio is great. I usually select stereo and play it in 7 channel. Sends more sound to the front mains rather than the center channel. Video editing is great also. Close ups of the band jamming throughout the show.
Don't miss this show. I have friends that when they come over this show is always requested and I never let them down. In Sully's immortal words, "I think it's time to turn this up another notch". Moon Baby. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Great Purchase
2009-08-11 - Product shipped and received faster than expected. Exactly as seller described it. This DVD is in perfect condition and I got it for a great price!! Great shopping experience!
Excellent sound and footage!
2008-12-13 - The previous long reviews missed the fact that the DVD allows you to watch just the concert footage or watch the concert with documentary material or watch any individual song. This is a high quality capture of both the sound and the important footage. It DOES NOT make the mistake of showing the singer during the guitar solo, etc like many old rock films. It gives ample coverage of each member playing, as well as, documentary footage of each member. If you are a drummer you will really enjoy the drum material. The drummer Shannon Larkin is an especially interesting performer in his style. Also, one entire song is a dueling drum solo between Sully and Larkin. One review said the solo was improvised; but, that reviewer must not be a drummer. Actually, the solo is highly coordinated and includes tributes to the licks of both John Bonham and Neil Peart. I have not seen the other two Smack videos in which reviewers complain about poor documentary and poor footage and poor sound. Apparently, the group sought to correct those problems with this film which has revealing personal documents, excellent footage, and studio quality sound. A must have for fans. Highly recommended for any musician. PS the name Godsmack is not a slur against God: a "Godsmack" is when God metes out instant justice upon you for doing what you mocked others for (hypocrisy). Clearly, Sully is a disillusioned backslidden Catholic whose lyrics constantly reveal his despair and misery as he searches for God in all the wrong ways and places.
Godsmack Good!
2008-10-06 - If you want to listen to a crisp hard blend of powerful vocals and clean guitar riffs, look no further than Godsmack. The video has a professional quality that is both pleasing and palatable to the viewer. The drum solo is engaging--and best of all--it is not an exercise in self-indulgence, as most drum solos tend to be. Most of the songs are top shelf material and are presented with a sincerety and professionalism that escapes most artists at a similar stage in their careers. It was with pure pleasure that I watched this band's concert footage.
This will make you appreciate Godsmack.
2008-09-19 - I wasn't into Godsmack for a long time. I had a preconceived notion that they were an Alice in Chains rip-off because of what many people said so I never really tried to listen to them. Then I heard their first CD in it's entirety from a friend at work and I decided to get a few CD's. Eventually I grew to like them a lot, then after watching live performances such as this I can now say that I love their music and am a huge fan.
After watching this DVD you realize they are a bunch of laid back guys who have no ego problems and are really about the music and work hard to put on a great show. And Sully is hilarious with his Boston accent, especially with his description of the "fart" recordings.
This also makes you realize how talented the man is. Not only does he sing and play guitar, he plays drums rather amazingly along with Shannon in the drum battle. It's great to see a drum "solo" where the entire band is involved but the drums are featured and not unaccompanied. The drum battle is simply awesome and I loved every minute of it.
Speaking of drums, Shannon Larkin is an absolute beast on skins and he is by far my favorite drummer to watch live. He is so full of energy and aggression, but not without finesse. Sometimes he steals the show and that's a good thing.
The only complaint that I have is that if you watch the movie part with all the interviews and such, certain songs are only shown in segments like "Whatever". But if you watch it from the concert listing you can see the entire song. And they could have made the back to back songs flow a little better.
Though nothing's perfect, the performances are awesome and the backstage fun is funny, light hearted and entertaining enough to make you realize these guys are for real.
