Good Charlotte Reviews:
An album for the kids that knew the hard knocks life
2008-05-23 - This is NOT emo, this is NOT punk, they never said it was either, its a blend of Pop-Punk with lyrics that portray the true life events of Benji and Joels life, father leaving them, mother raising them, being poor and growing up on the streets of DC. Unlike my chemical romance, GC act ually has a reason for some of their sadder, more meloncholly songs, they dont sing about slitting your wrists or crying to your friends, they sing about sticking up your chin, fighting through the hard times, and surviving life.
I loved this band years ago, and still today I have no hard feelings for them, although my musical tastes have evolved, but I just couldnt bear to see my childhood favorite cd get bashed by a bunch of ignorant fools.
If you can relate to being poor, fatherless, rejected by your peers and downright angry, you just might love this cd, I know I did.
GOOD!!!
2008-03-25 - I really like this CD. I would definitely say that it's better than "The Chronicles of Life and Death." My favorite songs are "The Click," I heard You," "Let Me Go," "Little Things." Okay, I like every song on this CD. I think you should definitley give it a listen before you make any real decisions about it. Just because some people don't like doesn't mean that you won't.
Not The Best - Not The Worst
2007-05-09 - I love GC, but this album didn't satisfy me. The meaning and content of the songs was immature and the actual music was just too simple (I am a musician, so I can tell by listening to it). Now, I have to say that I didn't hate the album, but they can do better and HAVE done better.
Teens like this music
2007-01-05 - My teen daughters like this group. Too weird for me though.
A Decent First Album...
2006-02-15 - I'd like to drop this album somewhere inbetween the "this sucks so bad" and "i love GC!11" category. 3 stars seems quite appropriate.
This is Good Charlotte's first album. They are not nearly as refined here as they are on, "The Young and the Hopeless" but at the same time that adds a certain quality to it. While their latest album, "The Chronicles of Life and Death" seems to have suffered OVER-production, this album has been UNDER-produced. I would recommend, if you're new to Good Charlotte, picking up, "The Young and the Hopeless" to hear these guys at their best and then back-tracking to this album.
Still, if you insist on starting with this album it isn't going to kill you. The vocals are straight and clean for the most part. The harmony isn't bad at all and these songs are fun to sing along with. On the down side they do get whiney once or twice, so if you can't stand Avril Lavigne or New Found Glory, you may be turned off by some of the vocals. Overall, I'd give the vocals 4 stars.
The guitar isn't mixed very well in my opinion. It seems kind of, "in the background" not what I want from a rock group. Solos are lacking but the riffs are catchy. Guitar gets 3 stars.
Bass is fantastic, mixed quite well for a rock band. They have a few songs with nice outstanding bass but for the most part the bass sits where it should, holding the song up silently unless one listens for it. Excellent but nothing to talk about. 4 stars.
Drums are also "in the background" at times. And you won't find many beats you'll want to learn to play yourself or get stuck in your head. Overall, it could be better... 2 stars.
Finally, lyrics. Love 'em or hate 'em. That's what I say. I know I enjoy the simplicity found here while others can't stand it. If you want creative lyrics, go buy Death Cab for Cutie's album, "Transatlanticism". If you want some fun rock riffs and hooks, pick up GCs first album, "Good Charlotte."
I hope this has been a fairly unbiased review and I hope it helps you out!
Thanks!
