Editorial Review:
An institution north of the Canadian border, Gordon Lightfoot is practically the living embodiment of what many think of as the national character. Stoic, weathered, and hard-working, Lightfoot practices a husky brand of folk music that's as timeless as the Canadian landscape that seems to loom above his most memorable melodies. This overdue four-disc retrospective stretches all the way back to 1962, when the Ontario-born performer tried to make it in Nashville, up to 1998; 16 previously unreleased tracks and another 17 previously available only on vinyl add meat to its frame. Yes, the familiar tunes are here--"For Lovin' Me" (a hit for both Peter, Paul & Mary and Ian & Sylvia), "Early Morning Rain," "If You Could Read My Mind," "Sundown," "Carefree Highway," and the oft-parodied but truly evocative "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." But Songbook, like the artist it commemorates, isn't defined by radio staples. It's about the splendid expanse that is the decades-long career of a true musical workhorse. --Steven Stolder
Songbook Reviews:
One of the best...
2009-12-16 - ...collections of Gordon Lightfoot music I have ever heard. This collection is a must for any serious Lightfoot fan.
A Gordon Lightfoot Treasure Chest
2009-12-15 - I waited a long time before I purchased this box set, as I have all the available Lightfoot cd's. Now I wonder why I waited so long. It is a masterful collection (at a very resonable price) by one of the greatest minds in folk music. Each of the four cd's represents a particular stage in Lightfoot's career, from the early days to more recent times, and what a long, wonderful career it has been. There are several gems here that you won't see anywhere else, but some of the greatest songs in the history of folk are in this beautiful set, as well. There is also a well-crafted booklet included, narrated by Lightfoot, that has many interesting stories behind the lyrics of these great songs. In short, if you're on the fence as I was, do yourself a favor and buy this collection. You will not be disappointed, even if you're not a Lightfoot fan!
WONDERFUL
2009-11-05 - There is no way they could fit all the Lightfoot songs I like on four CDs I understand that, however the ones that are here are great. I love this collection. I have always been a Lightfoot fan since the very early 70's. The sound is good and he sings the original version on 99% of the tunes here. Gords Gold finds him re-recording a lot of the early stuff, these are the originals for the most part. Even with this set I still had to have the original albums that are out on CD now for the lost ones that didn't make it in this collection. ANYWAY what I am trying to say is, LOVE IT. You can't go wrong. There is NO ONE like Gordon Lightfoot.
Great album
