Use Your Illusion Reviews:
A nice compilation of Use Your Illusion I and II
2009-09-23 - I'm not a Guns N' Roses fan, so I'm not interested in buying all their albums. With that in mind, I thought that buying this Use Your Illusion compilation CD would be a nice compromise between buying both albums and buying neither. I was not disappointed. This album contains all the songs I care about (and a few I don't) and even editing the telephone conversation out of Knockin' on Heaven's Door actually made the song better, in my opinion. This CD is nicely balanced between both albums, containing six songs from each. It even contains both versions of Don't Cry, which I consider a good thing.
CD
2008-11-13 - The picture shown for this item was for the Use You Illusion set, 1 & 2.
That is what I though I was buying, the set... I only got Illusion 1. So I feel I did not get what I paid for.
Yes and No...
2006-06-17 - In the not-too-distant past, I believed that the two "Use Your Illusion" albums could/should have been done as one album containing the best tracks from both albums. After discovering this compilation (in a sense, after discovering what would have been), I am now very thankful that they decided to release two full albums after all.
The obvious problem here---both for me and I suspect everyone else---is the track selection. "You Ain't the First" and "Don't Cry (Alt. Lyrics)," for example, each probably are some fan's favorite, but they are not the hits that someone apparently thinks they are. In fact, one of the biggest hits from the set, "You Could Be Mine," is not even on this compilation. Also, as others have noted, these are the profanity-free, almost pop tracks and they do not accurately represent the group---Guns N' Roses had some mellower songs, such as these, but for the most part they are angry, hard-rocking, and not shy about using casual profanity.
I can't avoid the temptation to share my idea of a consolidated "Use Your Illusion:"
CIVIL WAR
GET IN THE RING
PERFECT CRIME
GARDEN OF EDEN
DON'T DAMN ME
YOU COULD BE MINE
DUST N' BONES
BAD OBSESSION
DOUBLE TALKIN' JIVE
THE GARDEN
NOVEMBER RAIN
14 YEARS
DEAD HORSE (or YESTERDAYS)
COMA
If you disagree with this lineup, or any of the other reviewers' different lineups, you can see why releasing a consolidated "Use Your Illusion" in this era is problematic.
People who have never heard the complete "Use Your Illusion" set would probably be doing themselves a favor if instead of purchasing this, they saved-up a little more money and purchased both "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II," and then (if they still desire) made their own compilation. The only reason that I can think of for purchasing this is to keep it as a collectors' item.
here's how it shoulda gone
2005-12-09 - 1. you could be mine
