Editorial Review:
Limited Edition Enhanced Japanese pressing of the sophomore album from the No Doubt vocalist and fashion icon features one bonus track ('Wind It Up'-Harajuku Lovers Live Version) plus two bonus enhanced videos: 'Orange County Girl' (Live) and 'Wind It Up' (Harajuku Lovers Live Version). On her second album, the music and fashion icon takes you on a wild musical and visual ride featuring some of the most creative collaborators of our time, including Pharrel Williams, Nellee Hooper, Tim Nice-Oxley Of Keane and Tony Kanal Of No Doubt. Other contributors to the album include Akon, Sean Garrett, Swizz Beatz, Dave Stewart and Keane’s Tim Rice-Oxley. This album is surprisingly different than the last one. "I started recording it last year before Kingston was born and it’s definitely evolved over the last year. The dance sound is very ‘now.’ It’s modern not so retro," says the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter.
Description of The Sweet Escape:
There's nothing like a Gwen Stefani disc to rip you from your pop comfort zone and, in the pleasantest way possible, knock you around a bit. On The Sweet Escape, the blows arrive roughly every four minutes: a yodel ("Wind It Up") skitters off ceremoniously before the title track, featuring Akon, catches you off guard with its infectious yelps of "Woo-hoo, YEE-hoo!," and the pouty rap of "Orange County Girl" has barely petered out before we're vectored somewhere back toward the '80s with the indie rock-ish "Early Winter." That the sound of these songs doesn't follow a formula--that they pounce wherever they please, without regard for genres or decades--is no big whoop; this is Gwen Stefani, after all, and her up-for-anything, play-along fans probably wouldn't have it any other way. More surprising is the extent to which Stefani inserts what seems to be her genuine self into the music: "4 in the Morning," a Madonna-reminiscent midtempo groover, drops the wide-eyed Betty Boop pose and basks in a rarely plumbed depth of feeling ("I give you everything that I am / I'm handing over everything that I've got / 'cause I wanna have a really true love," she sings with something like sincerity). A single track later, she's owning up to motherhood in the sexiest, most unapologetic way possible: "I know you've been waiting," she pants, "but I've been off making babies / And like a chef making donuts and pastries / It's time to make you sweat." Lyrics don't get much cleverer than the ones to "Breakin' Up," a kiss-off disguised as a dropped cell phone call, and sounds don't get much swizzier than the ones on "Now That You Got It." Which is to say that Gwen's got game--as much as on Love.Angel.Music.Baby, if not more--and that anytime she's prepared to hollaback, the world will do well to listen. --Tammy La Gorce
The Sweet Escape Reviews:
Gwen rocks!
2009-11-19 - The first time I listened to this album I thought it was awful! I hated wind it up and sweet escape woo-hoo was annoying and well I wanted my money back! But then I relistened at Now That You Got It became my favorite Gwen Stefani song of all! The thing about Sweet Escape that's different about her Love Angel Music Baby-is that SE is modern while LAMB has a retro feel, I like both and am glad Gwen did these two albums!
For Real???
2009-11-04 - I downloaded this album thinking it would be as good as her last album. I'm quite disappointed. Yummy is absolutely annoying as well as a lot of other songs on it. What happened to her funk and creativity? I know she could do better than this. I'm starting to think about taking this album off my MP3 but maybe my 7 year old will like it. I'll just stick with her older albums and I don't recommend this to anyone over 20 - seems like a teen album.
Big Disappointment
2009-09-17 - Don't you hate it when you hear a great song on the radio or at a club so you take a gamble and buy the CD? That is what happened with me purchasing this one. The title track is very good and sure to put you in a good mood, with its classic pop sound. However, like many pop artists its one of only a few good songs on the CD. It is as though the producer decided to focus on one or two songs and the rest are just fillers. Besides the title track and a handful of others Gwen sounds like she is in 7th grade trying to cross the lines of trying to be cool and be a cheerleader. The music is stiff (for lack of better words) for the most part, and the yodel she incorporates is very irritating. However, if you like high school cheerleading and want to put it to music you may like it.
Good Stuff
2009-08-27 - Great seller & fast shipping. Product was recieved in great condition, No skips, scratches or any defects that i could see. My wife has been looking for this CD & i found it for her. She is completely satisfied with this product. I do recomend purchasing from Mojo Sounds & will purchase again. Thank you & God Bless.........
One of the best releases that came out that year!
2009-04-05 - I remember this album practically took everybody by storm, and then when she performed on American Idol, I knew she was going to be around for a while. I like her solo work as good as her work with No Doubt. Because let's face it. She is the voice singing on all of No Doubt's stuff. Over the years, she's dramatically changed her image. I remember when she was considered only alternative and then No Doubt got huge and became pop. Then she said she wanted to do rap. I was like wtf? I wasn't a big fan of her 1st album, but this one outdoes it by a long shot. All the singles were huge when they came out, the look was cool, the production was very slick. I liked everything about this cd. It had to be one of my favorite to come out during that year. Wind it Up, The Sweet Escape, Now that you've got it. I mean all of the tracks were awesome. And the cd had a few more tracks that were better. Fluorescent and Break Up were two excellent songs, and they could have been huge hits. To me this is a great followup, so to speak, to Nelly Furtado's Loose. If you love that CD then your really going to love this one. A lot of people said Madonna was supposed to do a similiar album, but to me this one was far superior.
