With its curious blend of tribute performance and biographical vignettes, Hank Williams: The Man and His Music serves up a tasty jambalaya of Grand Ol' Opry atmosphere and reverent appreciation. Taped before a dinner-and-cocktails audience and originally broadcast on American television in 1980, this 88-minute variety special was primarily intended as a cross-generational showcase for Hank Williams Jr. (a.k.a. "Bocephus," as his late father called him), who was then at the height of his country-music success. The father-son affection gives the show its warm glow of nostalgia, and as performed by many of Hank Sr.'s contemporaries and younger admirers, the songs remain timelessly appealing. With due respect to Hank Jr. and Kris Kristofferson, this is an old-timer's celebration, and appearances by the likes of "Sheriff" Faron Young, Roy Acuff, and Johnny Cash offer some memorable highlights of country music history. They mesh agreeably with the filmed vignettes, in which several highlights (and lowlights) of Hank Sr.'s life are recreated by sound-alike performer Jim Owen, who captures Williams's tortured spirit and troubles with alcoholism with uncanny (albeit somewhat melodramatic) authenticity. The original 2-channel stereo recording has been "extrapolated" to Dolby 5.1-channel stereo, and the result is a smooth, upgraded treat for longtime Hank Sr. devotees. --Jeff Shannon

Hank Williams - The Man and His Music Reviews:
EXCELLENT AND YET LIKE THE CONCERT HANK NAVER GAVE, IT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER... 3 Star Review
2009-06-03 - Cd ok but on the movie that's mentioned in one of the lyrics in this album I say the following:
The Shown Hank never gave is melancholic,
Good to know Hank is back, good to see him and imagine him in the last concert. I'd add Move it on Over, Lonesome Highway. But in the middle of a movie, things go astray. All of a suddent Hank and some unknown band members go into some old room in the bar, then some pretty woman comes to do hank, but he only says he wants to talk to her. Before Hank tells the crowd he is done with drinking, then he wants a drink, go figure... I'd definitely cut that crap out and restart (I did it for myself) the movie after Hank returns, I'd skip the first song too, how can he be drunk and sing, nobody gives him mike for 2 minutes, and then all of a sudden be somber, full of life again. There is over hour of singing and celebrating, that's great but the final song should have ended with real Hank singing Lost Highway & it should have started after midnight, ended 00:05 Jan 1 1953! Otherwise good movie, gives you nostalgic feeling but instead of buying it, go borrow it!

2005-05-17 - Hank Williams would've run from the room screaming and clawing his face upon hearing this dreadful representation of Hank Williams and his music...complete orchestration to represent the out of meter raw country blues of Hank williams...how terribly misapplied...a poor clumsy attempt to cross over and appeal to the undeserving elitist pop music crowd...and it is surprizing Hank Williams Jr. would be part of documentary that failed miserably in providing insight to Hank's angst...it was disappointing to seemingly be ashamed of blues driven hillbilly music...the better DVD documentary is "Hank Williams" Honky Tonk Blues....

The best DVD I own. 5 Star Review
