Hanson Conducts Hanson Reviews:
Great Piece, one for our time. 4 Star Review
2009-08-20 - I bought the CD specifically for "Song of Democracy." I did this work in the 1970s. I love the text, Walt Whitman, and the musical setting. The climax "Sail, sail thy best, Ship of Democracy. Of value is thy freight...." has stayed with me for decades. It is a musically and lyrically exciting work. I cannot fault the composer's interpretation of his own work. It was sung well and still moving. My only disappointment was the choir's diction. I had difficulty following the text in places. I considered looking for my own dogeared copy to follow the poem. "Song of Democracy" reminds us, in these divided days, of what we have inherited and the importance of preserving it. "Of value is our freight."

Lyric passion! 5 Star Review
2009-08-14 - Howard Hanson with his symphonies "Nordic" and "Romantic" really exposed with undeniable evidence, the power of the genetic rapture of his parents.

Both works distillate majestic musicality and lyric rapture. Without these works, your musical collection will be never enough and even less representative of the XX Century music.

A must-have.

Handsome Hanson 5 Star Review
2009-06-21 - I found this album to be highly satisfying. Many things are recommendable about this disc: Hanson's taut direction, the fine performances of the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra, and vivid, realistic recorded sound.

Buying this recording for his famous second symphony, I was really delighted by his first symphony, which is a broader, darker piece. Check out the lyrical beauty of the andante with its coda of delicate, cooing winds.

Included here is his "Song of Democracy," which reprises material from his second symphony. A very nice piece.

Hanson's academic career in music was very modernist, as the liner notes indicate, but his compositions are unabashedly romantic. They have a certain bittersweetness and size which reminds me of Grieg. All very accessible.

Aesthetic quality/sound quality (out of 10): 10/10

"Alien" 5 Star Review
2008-09-23 - The Andante section of symphony No 2 (can be downloaded alone) was used at the end of the movie Alien.

typical american composer 2 Star Review
2008-05-22 - Like most American composers Howard Hanson is a little on the bland side. His 2nd symphony has some admirers although I'm not sure why. At least the CD isn't expensive so you can be bored cheaply.
