CONTAINS: THE MAKING OF AMERICAN GRAFFITI DOCUMENTARY FEATURING INTERVIEWS WITH DIRECTOR GEORGE LUCAS, EXECUTIVE PRODUCER FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA, AND CAST MEMBERS PLUS NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN SCREEN TESTS OF THE CAST AND THEATRICAL TRAILER.

    Description of American Graffiti:
Here's how critic Roger Ebert described the unique and lasting value of George Lucas's 1973 box-office hit, American Graffiti: "[It's] not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie's success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant." The time to which Ebert and the film refers is the summer of 1962, and American Graffiti captures the look, feel, and sound of that era by chronicling one memorable night in the lives of several young Californians on the cusp of adulthood. (In essence, Lucas was making a semiautobiographical tribute to his own days as a hot-rod cruiser, and the film's phenomenal success paved the way for Star Wars.) The action is propelled by the music of Wolfman Jack's rock & roll radio show--a soundtrack of pop hits that would become as popular as the film itself. As Lucas develops several character subplots, American Graffiti becomes a flawless time capsule of meticulously re-created memory, as authentic as a documentary and vividly realized through innovative use of cinematography and sound. The once-in-a-lifetime ensemble cast members inhabit their roles so fully that they don't seem like actors at all, comprising a who's who of performers--some of whom went on to stellar careers--including Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, and Paul Le Mat. A true American classic, the film ranks No. 77 on the American Film Institute's list of all-time greatest American movies. --Jeff Shannon

    American Graffiti Reviews:

Back Into Time 5 Star Review
2009-09-06 - American Graffiti If like me, you where into girls, cars and staying out on Saturday nights with your friends, this great movie will take you back to those glorious weekend nights of our youth

Great 50's Movie 5 Star Review
2009-08-23 - Having lived as a teenager in the 50's, I can definitely relate to this movie. It's a great depiction of what life was really like back in those days. The movie stirs up a lot of happy memories for me of the good ole days when you enjoyed the simpler things in life and friends really meant something to you. The choice of cast members is great, the music is great and the story-line is great. I never get tired of watching this movie.

A Fun Show As Well As A Classic 4 Star Review
2009-07-11 - Although I have heard about American Graffiti for many years, I had never seen it until now.

It is a teenage coming of age show set in a small California town in the early 1960s. It features Curt Henderson (Richard Dreyfuss) and Steve Bolander (Ron Howard) as best friends who are getting ready to go off to college together. They have lots of second thoughts and relationship issues to sort through. There are lots of typical teenager type situations throughout - car chases, breakups, etc. It is really a fun show to watch.

In addition to the storyline, there is a lot of great classic music and some future big stars getting a start besides Dreyfuss (Ron Howard was already well known from his childhood series work). Others who are in this include Suzanne Somers and Harrison Ford. The legendary disk jockey Wolfman Jack also fills a cameo role.

Although I may have never gotten around to watching this movie if it wasn't in my Netflix queue, I am glad that I did. It is really a good time.
