Editorial Review:
Nominated for 6 Academy Awards; director Mike Nichols' witty, romantic look at life in the corporate jungle stars Melanie Griffith as Tess McGill, an ambitious secretary with a unique approach for climbing the ladder to success. When her classy, but villainous boss (Sigourneey Weaver) Breaks a leg skiing, Tess simply takes over her office, her apartment, even her wardrobe. She then creates a deal with a handsome investment banker (Harrison Ford) that will either take her straight to the top - or finish her off for good.
Description of Working Girl:
Melanie Griffith had a fling with stardom in this Mike Nichols comedy about an executive secretary (Griffith) who can't get her deserved shot at upward mobility in the brokerage industry. Hardly taken seriously by male bosses, things aren't really any better for her once she starts working for a female exec (Sigourney Weaver, never more delightful), a narcissist with a boy-toy banker (Harrison Ford) and a tendency to steal the best ideas from her underlings. When Weaver's character is laid up with a broken leg, Griffith poses as a replacement wheeler-dealer, flirting with Ford and working on a new client who doesn't suspect the deception. Nichols brings a lot of snap and sass to Kevin Wade's smart script about chafing against class restrictions and perceptions. Sundry scenes are played quite charmingly, especially those of Griffith and Ford's mutual pickup in a bar and Joan Cusack's championing of Griffith's crusade. Nominated for Best Picture, Director, Actress (Griffith), and two Supporting Actress awards (Weaver, Cusack); Carly Simon's song "Let the River Run" won the Oscar. --Tom Keogh
Working Girl Reviews:
Great Movie Great Score
2009-08-27 - The great Mike Nichols directed a perfect cast in this top notch romantic comedy with a Women Rights message to boot. Griffith in her best most appealing role ever. Ford is funny, handsome, and charming, what's not to like. The supporting cast is phenomenal, Weaver is dynamite as Griffith's mentor and rival and Cusack is just plain hilarious. The Carly Simon score is inspired.
Romance At It's Best!!
2009-06-03 - The movie itself had a good story line, with a perfect touch of romance.
I love Harrison Ford and Melanie Grffith, they are perfect together in this movie, not to mention Alec Baldwin, Sigourney Weaver and Joan Cusack.
an office drudge to climber Cinderella story?
2009-05-31 - This movie is a breaking down the glass ceiling movie about developing a profitable idea, getting it past the dragon lady boss, and finding Prince Charming. A Jersey side secretary puts in the hours, but gets no respect because humble origins; her Jersey boy friend is a "snake"( her words).
This is the 80's resurgence of the American Empire as a romantic comedy.
Actually Melanie Griffith is more than a pretty face her,
but the concept of a climber is not all that new.
Doing an end run around the bad guy ( girl) , she gets the whole deal.
2 stars out of 4
2009-05-21 - The Bottom Line:
One of the most dated movies I can think of and a thoroughly overrated piece of filmmaking that somehow scored Melanie Griffith an Oscar nomination for her grating, word-by-word line readings, Working Girl is only of interest for people with misguided 80s nostalgia or very strong feminism.
Success
2009-04-12 - Melanie Griffith is Tess McGill, a very ambitious secretary, when fortune gives her a once-in-a-liftime break - her boss(Sigourney Weaver), classy but a real pain, breaks a leg while skiing and Tess steps in and takes over her office, her apartment, even her wardrobe. In this guise, she proposes a daring plan to an investment banker(Harrison Ford); this daring proposal will either shoot her right to the top or finish her off for good. You will become enamored with Tess and wish her all the success that she deserves which makes this film always fun.
