Feisty Latina Mercedes (Rosie Perez) earns her living at Nick's Dance Club in East L.A. - a seedy dollar-a-dance hall filled with eccentric characters, including a wise-cracking transvestite (Steve Buscemi) and a savvy bartender (Quentin Tarantino) - as she pursues her true calling by day: struggling actress. One night at work, Mercedes meets a young immigrant named Ernesto (Michael DeLorenzo), who immediately falls for her. But Mercedes already has a man - washed-up TV star Harry Harrelson (Harvey Keitel), who repeatedly tells her that all he needs is $10,000 to make a new start. Meanwhile, Mercedes and Ernesto begin spending time together, but her affections remain with her married lover, Harry. Late one night, a love-sick and drunken Ernesto attempts to break into Mercedes hotel room, and the two end up spending a passionate night together. The next day Ernesto sets out, determined to get the $10,000 that Mercedes needs to give Harry his new start. To make enough money, Ernesto agrees to do a hit for the Mexican mob, setting in motion a downward spiral of grim events that will change the lives of everyone involved in this gritty and unpredictable drama.
