Editorial Review:
In this hilarious romantic comedy, Gray (Heather Graham) helps her brother (Tom Cavanaugh) find the love of his life. But the night before her brother's wedding, Gray's world is turned upside-down when she discovers that she has feelings for his fiancé (Bridget Moynahan)! With the help of a sarcastic co-worker (Molly Shannon), a sympathetic cab driver (Alan Cumming), and her therapist (Oscar-winner Sissy Spacek), Gray is forced to figure out who she really is.
Description of Gray Matters:
Gray Matters has one of the most adorable casts of any movie in recent years--the combined sweetness of Heather Graham (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me), Bridget Moynahan (Lord of War), Molly Shannon (Year of the Dog), Thomas Cavanagh (Ed), Alan Cumming (X-Men 2), and Sissy Spacek (Carrie, In the Bedroom) narrowly avoids being diabetes-inducing. Gray (Graham) and her brother Sam (Cavanagh) have been best friends forever--so close that they find it hard to date. Gray pushes Sam into asking out Charlie (Moynahan), but when Sam and Charlie hit it off so well they spontaneously decide to get married, Gray finds herself unexpectedly dismayed... but not as dismayed as she is when, on a girls' night out before the ceremony, she and Charlie share a drunken kiss that sets Gray's body tingling. Gray Matters juggles a lot of emotional issues; the sibling interconnectedness problem doesn't flow smoothly into the coming-out story of the movie's second half. But sprinkled throughout are charming scenes and wonderfully deft moments that make the story's clumsy missteps all the more baffling. There's no question that Graham is a star who just can't seem to find the right vehicle; Gray Matters won't be her breakthrough, but it's further evidence of her significant appeal. --Bret Fetzer
Gray Matters Reviews:
Simply Adorable
2009-06-02 - I didn't know what to expect at first because the reviews for this film were all over the place but let me just say this film is awesome. There are so many things about it that make it exceptional and a must see. It's hilarious, the characters are charming and enthralling and the way they handled the subject of coming out was in my opinion great. Add to that a phenomenal sibling relationship and you can easily see why this film is a winner. What's not to love about all that?
Gray Matters movie review
2009-03-18 - This movie is hilarious! I can watch it over and over again. If I feel like I need a laugh, I watch it! It has great acting and the writers did a great job with the script, it is unpredictable and witty. I highly recommend this movie. And the actors are top notch!
Over-Acting is nobodies friend
2008-09-26 - I hate to do this to Alan Cumming because he's a great actor and he is, like always great in his character for this movie. But his acting alone could not carry this movie. The characters in this film are completely flat. Watching this movie you keep waiting for it to actually /start/. For the acting to begin, for you to actually start caring what's going on. For SOMETHING! But it never does. Instead you get a whole movie over acted angst. And then in the last 10 minutes are so, something worthwhile happens and then the movie is over.
Honestly, if you're dead set on watching this movie rent it. Other wise, you'll hate yourself when at the end of the movie your one thought is... "Rachel Shelly is gorgeous."
It was OK
2008-07-07 - This movie was OK. I would say if you can rent it do that but it is not worth a purchase. Just another disfunctional relationship but only between a brother and sister and they end up falling in love with the same woman.
Great fun!
2008-04-07 - This is a great, fun movie that is a romantic comedy in the genre of those 1940's gems some of us are old enough to remember.
True to life? Not much. But it is just light hearted and fun with some cute dance routines. The actors are all good in their roles and sure it would have been nice to have Gray experience a little more romance for us all to ogle, but it was sweet and unreal and smile worthy.
Nothing earth shattering, nothing overly dramatic, just a good fun time.
Enjoy it. I did and I do. Bought it and have fun watching it anytime I want something just fun.
