Editorial Review:
Dignity isn't for sale. It comes from within. Hilary Duff has always carried herself with dignity, from her 2001 TV debut starring in "Lizzy McGuire," through big screen hits like "Cinderella Story" and "Cheaper by the Dozen," to her career as a multi-platinum recording artist, with more than 13 million albums sold to date. Now Hilary brings her customary class and splash to her new Hollywood Records CD "Dignity. At 19, Hilary has matured into a sophisticated singer and songwriter. Hilary has co-written all the songs on 'Dignity', always aiming high and ultimately creating an album of depth and consequence. To realize her vision for the new CD, she teamed with Grammy-Award winning Kara Dioguardi ( Gwen Stefani, Pussy Cat Dolls, Enrique Iglesias, Kelly Clarkson), as well as top producer/songwriters like Chico Bennett & Richard Vission (Madonna, Usher, Killers), Tim & Bob (Nas, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez), Vada Nobles (Rhianna, Lauryn Hill, Faith Evans, Natasha Bedingfield, Warren G), Fredwrecke (Snoop Dog, Eminem, Fergi) Will.I.Am and Rhett Lawrence. In the title track, she talks about her experiences and observations of living in Los Angeles ("Where's your dignity/I think you lost it in the Hollywood Hills"). "Danger" explores the suspect advances of an older man, while "With Love" turns the world's most common song topic upside down. ("I can take your honesty/All your words weigh heavily/I'm listening to you all the time"). The song 'Stranger' reveals a relationship that is picture perfect in public, but cold behind closed doors. With every track, Hilary probes life and love more intensely, and with more vulnerability than she has before. This is the deluxe CD/DVD version which includes 9 music videos.
Description of Dignity:
In the most dignified way possible, "Dignity"--the title track to this fizz-bomb of a dance-pop disc--sends a disgusted eye-roll and a flagrant puh-lease to underwear-eschewing celebutantes everywhere: "You'd show up to the opening of an envelope," sings Duff, who hangs onto her signature sweetness despite having entered full-on diss mode. "It's not news when you've got a new bag/It's not news when you're looking your best/Come on, give it a rest." Well said. And sung. Not that calling out the phony and the full of it is what Duff, or Dignity, is all about. Mostly, the disc is a beat-studded chronicling of an incredibly healthy 19-year-old psyche: On "Happy," she's happy despite an ex's attempts to make her miserable; on "With Love"--maybe her catchiest, most grown-up song to date--she's willing to accept rejection as long as kindness plays a role in its delivery. Musically, with the help of groove-conscious producers like Tim & Bob and Will.i.am, Duff edges ever closer to adult sensibilities; her goofball Lizzie McGuire days seem far behind. It's an evolution anybody could have seen coming, actually. Has there ever been a starlet with her head on straighter? --Tammy La Gorce
Dignity Reviews:
Not everyone is a musician...sorry Hilary
2009-11-05 - don't care what people say, not everyone is designed to sing or play an instrument.. and unfortunately for Hilary, she is one of those. This album is brain bleeding bad.. in fact, so bad that I deleted the tunes from my computer and then tossed the CD.
Dignity is Decent...
2009-08-12 - ...Hilary didnt quite take the Britney Spears route or the Mandy Moore route but surprisingly took the Kylie Minogue route and it works. I dont like the beat for stranger or tune but the words are good, but with dignity then the album really takes off, then you get with love, danger, all work, no play, i wish, play with fire, dreamer and a really good dance pop album-I much prefer this direction for Hilary.
Lizzie McGuire No More!
2009-07-10 - With the explosion of teen pop in the late 1990's, dominated by Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, its understandable if you overlooked (ignored) a wannabe pop princess or two, unless you were an adolescent at that time. As the new millennium got underway and these teenyboppers began careening toward adulthood, they tried with widely varying degrees of success to gain credibility as artists. No small feat. Indeed anyone who enters the teen pop industry is practically assured of having to navigate some choppy waters as they and their audience grow older, the saccharine sounds that brought them fame not weathering beyond a couple of years.
Hilary Duff is one such teen queen who was easy to overlook (ignore) if, like me, you were well past adolescence when she made a name for herself. What with Britney, Christina and later Jessica Simpson plastered everywhere, who needed another cutesy blonde? Time has passed and while the aforementioned singers have gone on to marriages, divorces, parenthood and tabloid escapades, Duff has gone from cutesy blonde to striking brunette and evolved from sugary teen pop to young adult fare. Her latest album, Dignity, says right off the bat that Lizzie McGuire is no more. For those who are willing to listen, Dignity is a surprisingly enjoyable affair, mixing slick, contemporary beats and blaring guitars with youthful appeal. Duff is no great singer by any stretch of the imagination, but she's at least as listenable as Britney or Jessica, if not more so.
Songs like the dark, driving "Stranger", the stinging title track and "With Love" with its electronic beeps and guitars prove extremely catchy, while the unconventional "Gypsy Woman" shows a maturing style. "No Work, All Play" takes on the much-used topic of accepting yourself as you are, and not running from life's rough times, but its married to such a wonderful melody and musical flourishes that any clichés can be forgiven. Guitar-driven "I Wish" has the slightly retro sheen of pop from the late 1980's to early 1990's, while songs like "Never Stop" and "Between You and Me" are more bubblegum- no doubt meant to appeal to her fans. On the whole this album shows Hilary Duff as no longer a girl, but not the hyper-sexualized woman that several other teen pop starlets have become (her recent Maxim photo shoot notwithstanding).
With the glut of highly-stylized pop personas that exist today, Duff still has a way to go to stand out from the crowd, but Dignity is a step in the right direction.
I was surprised at how decent this was!
2009-03-21 - I remember when this came out a lot of people were like, again? Another cd, but Hillary really proves that she's actually a decent artist with some good direction. There was a lot of buzz and I actually wound up liking this album, and i remember it being moderately successful. I thought with love was a very well produced image and video. It also had killer beats despite what people might say. Gypsy woman is a cover(im guessing). I thought it really wasn't that good. The rest of the tracks seem to be really strong on this album. Stranger is also another favorite of mine. I think the singles are the best tracks off of this album. It reminds alot of diddy's album just in more of a pop oriented sound. If you like pop music or like p diddy's last album then your def. like this.
Very fast shipping
2008-11-25 - I was surprised at how fast the CD arrived. My granddaughter was thrilled. Thanks so much.
