Editorial Review:
Investigative scholar Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank) is a debunker of modern "miracles," bringing scientific light to superstition and fraud. But events in tiny Haven, Louisiana, defy even her expertise. There, the 10 Biblical Plagues seem to be reoccurring. And the more she seeks answers, the more she questions her own beliefs. Two-time Academy Award (R) winner Swank headlines this electrifying Dark Castle Entertainment production that reaps locusts, frogs, a river of blood and more - all to eye-filling, fear-inducing, heart-probing, must-see effect.
Description of The Reaping (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD]:
The Reaping capitalizes on cheesy clichés to begin with, rendering it even less scary than predecessors like Children of the Corn, The Devil's Rain, Satan's Blood, or All the Colors of the Dark. Overuse of CG special effects ruin this already bad film about Louisiana State University scientist Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank), who heads to the bayou to investigate what at first she denies is a Biblical plague. The river has turned to blood, frogs fall from the sky, cattle die, and the townspeople keel over covered with red bumps, while Katherine, who happens to have been an ordained minister before she became a university professor, struggles to justify these horrendous events sans religion. Eventually, Katherine's skepticism places her in danger, as the town lays blame on Loren McConnell (AnnaSophia Robb), bewitched daughter of a local Satan worshipping family, and the one whom Katherine tries to protect since Loren recalls her own deceased daughter. As Katherine and Loren battle as angel and devil, they learn to instead forge Team Faith against the townsfolk who are all part of a sinister, inbred, Satanic cult. The film is badly cast, and the acting is horrendous, save Hilary Swank, who at least looks sexy traversing the swamps with a hunting knife hooked through her belt. The Rosemary's Baby ending is the icing on the cake. There is nothing original about The Reaping, except that it might be the biggest rip-off of previous Satanic cult films ever made. —Trinie Dalton
The Reaping (Combo HD DVD and Standard DVD) [HD DVD] Reviews:
GOOD TWIST
2009-09-12 - I THOUGHT THAT THIS MOVIE WAS GOOD AND TURNS OUT TO BE A LITTLE SCARY.
Oh my, a lightly perspiring Swank!
2009-08-30 - The main problem with The Reaping is that it's entirely derivative: the basic premise is one that has been covered many times before. The film certainly looks good: you can't fault the production from a visual point of view, but what Hollywood fails to realise time and time again is that effects alone do not a movie make. The CGI is very good, with some particularly convincing digital locusts, but it's all too `in your face' and along with the tired plot line and cardboard characters, the film never engages the viewer and therefore fails to scare or shock. The overblown ending is especially unsubtle and unconvincing. There's only one revelation here and that's how sexy Hilary Swank can be!
Nothing to get excited about . . .
2009-08-04 - but nothing to hate either. The biggest problem with this film is the script doesn't have a single original idea. It is a rehash of devil-worshipping movies going back to Rosemary's Baby. You get the standard windows blowing open, the priest who knows the truth but gets no one to believe him, the idiot hero (heroine in this case) going off alone into danger, the obligatory thunder storms, plagues, crazy characters, the silent stare of a supposedly evil child, and a variety of other horror movie cliches. Hilliary Swank is hardly a slouch as an actress, and I am surprised that she did a low-budget film like this, although she brought it some credibility. The acting overall was acceptable, although Englishman David Morrisey's Southern accent was more nondescript than identifiable. Idris Elba, also English, did, however, sound like an escapee from the 'hood. Watch the film but neither praise nor damn it because it deserves neither.
I liked it!!
2009-06-29 - I had forgotten all about this film until I saw its trailer on another movie. It was next on my list, and I'm glad I saw it.
I think it fits in with the pyschological/thriller genre, instead of horror. I thought the acting was great, and the story made sense.
This is one of those movies that you'll really like, or nor, not much in between.
I loved Swank's character, and I would reccommend renting this and giving it a chance.
I give it a B.
good premise, bad movie
2009-06-17 - this movie was a complete and utter disappointment. it could have been so good, but it was very very bad.
