In CHARMED, the three Halliwell sisters have accepted their destiny of protecting the innocent and vanquishing evil doers, even though that is generally not on the agenda of every twenty-something on the fast track to discovering what life's all about. Prue (Doherty), the oldest, is driven to succeed and dislikes the free-spirited antics of the youngest sister Phoebe (Milano). Piper (Combs), the earthy middle sister, mediates between her siblings. Prue has the power to move objects, Piper to freeze time and Phoebe to see the future. The sisters must band together to protect themselves, and the world, from the dark, demonic forces that seek to destroy them

Description of Charmed - The Complete First Season:
Charmed: The Complete First Season recaptures a period when television's WB network was particularly keen on series about the supernatural and specially powered characters. The original home of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and future launch pad for Angel and Smallville, the WB debuted Charmed in 1998 with many of the same intriguing ironies that made those other shows click. Specifically, the greater a character's powers, the more vulnerable he or she becomes; the more superhuman, the more painfully obvious one's lonely, fragile humanity. The Halliwells, a trio of witch heroines and siblings at the center of Charmed, is a case in point. Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) returns to her San Francisco family home after losing her job, and moves in with her older sisters Prue (Shannen Doherty) and Piper (Holly Marie Combs). On her first night back, Phoebe finds the Book of Shadows in the attic and recites a spell giving all three women unique powers they were always meant to have: Prue suddenly has the gift of telekinesis, Piper can make time stand still, and Phoebe can see into the future. All well and good, but along with those extraordinary abilities is a new awareness of dark forces in the world from which mortals need protection. In some cases, those forces have been plotting a long time to steal the Halliwell's magical legacy once they awakened to it--and now they will never let up.

Evil warlocks, demons, ancient curses, Grimlocks, and Wendigos (the last two are best left explained by their respective episodes), however, are only half the battle on this sexy dramedy, in which more ordinary matters of emotional and real-world survival also preoccupy the Halliwells. An important ally, Inspector Andy Trudeau (Ted King), is Prue's ex-lover, a delicate detail that mixes pain with duty as the couple rekindles their troubled relationship while solving otherworldly crimes. In "Dead Man Dating," Piper falls for the ghost of a murdered man who needs help, and later competes with Phoebe for the attention of a handyman, Leo (Brian Krause). Jobs and money are always an issue, too. At one time or another, Phoebe works as a psychic, Piper as a caterer, and Prue finds a job at an auction house. As with Buffy, the engine of Charmed is the seamless, sometimes-comic, sometimes-tender way in which all these dynamics in the magic and non-magic worlds blend together, presenting young adult challenges that are both unique and somehow terribly familiar. It is particularly fun to watch this series grow, deepen, and experiment during its first year. The season's true highlight is probably "That 70s Episode," in which the Halliwells go back in time to meet their younger selves. --Tom Keogh

Charmed season 1 5 Star Review
    2008-09-25 - Loved it.
Hadn't seen the TV series, was wanting to, so I bought the DVDs

love this show, disappointing DVDs though 3 Star Review
2008-06-27 - While I give this show five stars overall, I gave this season a lower rating because it is not my favorite, and I am continually disappointed everytime I watch the DVDs.

As a long-time Charmed fanatic, I eagerly awaited the release of the DVDs, seeing as how my video tapes were getting a bit worn out. Naturally I got the DVDs almost as soon as they were released, receiving them as a birthday present, and while I was beyond excited that I finally had them, I was very disappointed when I saw that they had no extras whatsoever. On each individual disk, the screen immediately goes to the list of episodes, and after clicking on a particular episode title, it immediately goes to the episode, not even giving you a list of options, such as subtitles, scene selection...etc.

Anyway, as for this particular season itself, I would have to say its not my favorite. Although I love all the first three seasons best, seeing as how Prue (played by Shannen Doherty) is in them, I would place this season as second best. Better than season two as a whole, but definitely not as good as season three.

Although Prue is, and will always be my favorite character, I could see why some people would dislike her, atleast in this season. She's very bitchy, stubborn, and uptight, and becomes much more likeable in seasons two and three. (Don't get me wrong though....I love Prue no matter what!)

The best thing about this season is the relationship between Prue and Andy, and it was unfortunate that he wasn't able to make it to season two at the very least. I personally thought they could have dragged out their relationship a lot longer! Sadly, out of the three seasons that Prue was alive, Andy was the only serious relationship she had, which is very unfair if you ask me.

But don't get me wrong, if you haven't seen this show, I still definitely recommend that you watch this season, but don't base your entire opinion on it because I don't believe that it shows charmed at its best, as season three does.

Here is a brief summary of the season one episodes:

Something Wicca This Way Come- This brilliant show starts off with three sisters-Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell- finding out that they are the most powerful witches of all time (aka the charmed ones) after Phoebe discovers and reads an incantation from the book of shadows. Prue can move things with her mind, Piper has the ability to freeze time, and Phoebe has premonitions. Prue also meets up with an old love, Andy Trudeau, and wonders if there's a place for him in her new life.

I've got you under my skin- Prue regrets sleeping with Andy and does her best to avoid him, while focusing her attention on a job offer she got from Bucklands auction house. Piper is having a hard time dealing with being a witch, and Phoebe works on having premonitions for her own personal use. Meanwhile, a demon that sucks the youth out of people is on the loose

Thank you for not Morphing- Warlocks with the ability to change their appearance try to get their hands on the Book of Shadows. Meanwhile, The Halliwells' father returns and they wonder what his intentions are

Dead Man Dating- A ghost named Mark, who was recently murdered, seeks the sisters' help and Piper ends up developing feelings for him

Dream Sorcerer- a man who has the ability to enter other peoples dreams and harm them, stalks Prue in hers, putting her life in danger

The Wedding From Hell- the sisters cater a wedding, only to find out that there are evil forces at work within the family

The Fourth sister- a demon entices a troubled young girl to get close to the Halliwell sisters

The Truth is out there...and it hurts- Prue, desperate to find out if Andy can handle the fact that she is a witch, casts a truth spell to get him to reveal his true feelings. The spell works...a little too well. For 24 hours everyone is forced to speak the truth

The Witch is Back- the Halliwells ancestor, Melinda Warren, travels from the past to stop a warlock she banished long ago, with the help of the charmed ones

Wicca Envy-two of Prues co-workers at Bucklands, including her boss Rex, are really demons who threaten Prue into giving up her powers

Feats of Clay- Phoebes ex-boyfriend comes to town, bringing along an egyptian urn that holds a mortal curse

The Wendigo- Piper is attacked by a wendigo (a wolflike creature) and is turned into one herself, giving her the urge to kill her sisters. After Piper is attacked, Andy goes on a stakeout with a female FBI agent, much to Prues jealously. Also, Prue hires Phoebe at Bucklands, where she gets a premonition involving a car crash and a baby

From Fear to Eternity- the sisters face their worst nightmares when a demon named Barbas uses their worst fears against them in an attempt to kill them

Secrets and Guys- Prue helps a kidnapped witch, and Phoebe finds out a secret about Leo

Is there a Woogy in the House- Phoebe turns evil after becoming possessed by the woogy, an ancient black shadow that lives in the attic, and begins turning the house against her sisters, which causes problems for Prue, who is having her boss over for dinner

Which Prue is it anyway- Prue casts a spell which creates two other Prues, in order to multiply her power so that she can defeat a powerful warlock

That 70's episode- the sisters travel back in time in order to stop their mom from making a pact with a warlock

When Bad Warlocks go Good- Prue helps, and falls for a man who is destined to become the evil charmed ones with his brothers

Blind-sided- after Pipers friends son is kidnapped by a sight-stealing demon, the sisters search for him. Phoebe enlists the help of a blind man who was kidnapped by the same demons years ago, and Piper makes a decision about josh (her new boyfriend). Prue is blackmailed by a tabloid writer, who sees her using her powers and gets it on tape. Also, Prue discovers that she can also channel her powers through her hands, and not just her eyes, and Andy discovers the truth about her powers

The Power of Two- Prue and Phoebe, who don't exactly always see eye to eye on things, must learn to deal with eachother without Piper around while she is out of town, and join forces (along with Andy) to vanquish Jackson Ward, aka the ghost of alcatrez, who is out for revenge.

Love Hurts- Leo returns after being wounded by a darklighters arrow. He asks the sisters to help a girl that the darklighter is targeting. Piper, worried that Leo is going to die, casts a spell to swap her powers with his, which accidently swaps Prue and Phoebes powers as well. Meanwhile, Andy is suspended from work due to him protecting Prues secret

De Ja Vu All Over Agan- in the first season finale, (one of the best episodes of this season, in my opinion) a demon named Rodriguez is determined to kill the charmed ones, and uses the help of a powerful demon named Tempus, who traps the girls in a time loop, turning back time repeatedly in hopes that Rodriguez will be successful in killing of three of them. Also, Andy makes a big sacrifice in order to save the sisters

    Seacon One 2 Star Review
2008-05-31 - Well this was the first of the charmed season sadly it was the most boring of them all. Prue which was the boss was over done as a character. No big sister is really like that bossy and bitchy. Phoebe was great as always full of spirit, the only one that kept things interesting. piper, which was the middle sister, she my second favorite. She was very sweet and her power was probably the coolest.

Charmed, Season 1, Yahoo!! 5 Star Review
2008-05-16 - Finally a T.V. show about witches and magic! I am so glad Aaron Spelling took a chance! I love, love, love Charmed. Season 1 is great because it is the beginning, the beginning of sister's becoming a family and the beginning of their Charmed destiny. The very first episode had me hooked. I am bias though, I am a huge Shannen Doherty fan. Even though she is such a bee-otch to work with I love her character Prue. I love all the characters.

My favorite episodes include, Dead Man Dating, a great episode about family and believing in family superstitions and Piper is just great in this episode. I love The Truth Is Out There and It Hurts!! This episode is a lot of fun after Prue casts a truth spell to find out if Andy would accept her as a witch! It affects all the sisters and is just fun to hear them tell people what they think! I loved Andy too, he was the best guy for Prue, anyway, I also love Leo, this episode is so exciting because Piper finally gets the courage to ask Leo what he thinks of her! Then there is That 70's Episode where they go back in time to warn their mother, Patty about a warlock who steals all their powers. Very special and emotional to see them interact with Patty and Grams. I love The Wendigo also, first episode that kind of scared me! Dream Sorcerer is also a creepy one. The Witch is back another family oriented episode where they learn of their ancestor Melinda Warren. Secrets and Guys is another good episode, Phoebe sees Leo floating in mid air trying to fix a chandelier and so now his cover is busted. When Phoebe tries to tell Piper and Prue they laugh at her and tell her what a great imagination she has! Very funny!! Love Hurts another one of my favorites, Piper finally learns Leo's true calling, he is their Whitelighter and is struck by an arrow from a Dark Lighter and now he is dieing. Piper switches their powers so she can try and heal Leo...love it! The finale is very sad Deja Vu All Over Again, Phoebe has a premonition of Andy being killed by a demon....and they figure out they keep reliving the same day over and over until the demon gets what he wants. I really liked Andy, even after he found out that they were witches (Blind Sided, great, great episode) he was just so awesome about everything and did whatever he could to protect Prue and their secret. Season 1 is a must buy, actually they all are...The Power of Three will set you free!!
