Description of The Borrowers:
The popular children's books by Mary Norton have been filmed before, but never with as much imagination and ingenuity as you'll find on display in this delightful fantasy film released to critical praise in 1998. The "Borrowers" of the title are a family of tiny people who live in the walls and under the floorboards in the homes of "normal-sized" humans; they earn their by "borrowing" the household items (string, food crumbs, buttons, etc.) needed to furnish their tiny hiding places and provide their meals. The little Clock family lives happily undisturbed in the home of an aged aunt, but when the aunt dies and her will is stolen by an unscrupulous lawyer (John Goodman), the Clocks face eviction and the frightening hazards of the outside world. Under the ingenious direction of Peter Hewitt, this simple, straightforward movie mixes comedy, adventure, and suspense with some of the cleverest special effects you've ever seen, taking full advantage of effects technologies to immerse you in the world of the tiny people. A climactic chase scene in a milk-bottling plant is a visual tour de force, and the movie's smart and dazzling enough to entertain parents and children alike. After its modest success in theaters, The Borrowers stands a good chance of becoming a home-video favorite. --Jeff Shannon
The Borrowers Reviews:
Too scary for childen!
2008-05-27 - I read the book "The Borrowers" as a young girl and was delighted to find this movie. But this movie scared me big time, it freeked me out even more than the Harry Potter movies! it was scarier and creapier. It is not a bit like the wonderful book by Mary Norton,(with the exeption of the title and the Borrower's names)and was also a BIG disapintment. The charitors are lame, and so is the storyline. The book was funny and great, and even appriate for 2 year olds, But this movie is nothing but SAD,SCARY, AND DISAPINTING, not appopiate for children.
Intergeneration Delight!
2008-03-26 - I have ten grandsons from 18 mos. to 15 years, and when this DVD is put on (it started with a mere VHS years ago)everyone sits down together to watch including the grandparents, parents, and down the line. Everyone is engaged, even the snarley pre-teens. For pure shared enjoyment you cannot go wrong with this delicious story, where little people win the day!
Tiny Borrowers
2007-12-22 - Not many people have seen Borrowers. They fear to be squished, they lived in places people live, they maybe small.
Good family entertainment
2007-12-06 - This is a cute tale that's good family entertainment. The special effects are very good, and the acting is top-notch.
