Editorial Review:
Written in 2000, this book is set in contemporary Australia – a mature society with a defined cultural identity but not without rough edges, which make lives unnecessarily hard and complicated.

Into this landscape drifts a demonic figure who calls himself Darius, who first appears in a short prologue, set in Southern Germany in the closing days of World War II.

It turns out that alongside humans there exists another race, outwardly human but with far greater longevity and physical strength. Their intelligence is about the same or greater than human, albeit it with certain blind spots. They hate humanity for displacing them from the top of the food chain, and their character traits give rise to traditional demonic myths - an enemy moving amongst us, intelligent, resourceful and hostile – and in constant search for human virgins.

But Darius does not merely wish to reproduce – he hopes that humanity is now such a self-evident failure, that it is possible to find women who will be willing accomplices in rebuilding his race and overthrow humans as the dominant species. He ruthlessly pursues this goal with all means at his disposal.

Darius behaves as a magnet - all who meet him instinctively line up to serve him or to oppose him, and their behaviour portrayed in the book is a merciless dissection of stereotypes of modern society.

But time is on Darius' side.

Trail of an Incubus Reviews:
glad I read it 4 Star Review
2007-01-11 - Trail of an Incubus is a fast paced journey through an urban and rural Australian environment verging on the wasteland of Mad Max 1. It follows the characters of the chasers and the chased and then some of the ones who get wasted on the sides.

This book is as good an action movie as the new James bond movie that I saw in
the cinemas recently and as good as Mission Impossible that I saw on TV the
other night. It could easily be converted to the screen. I was, however, glad there was
a more thoughtful and less action-packed last quarter, saving it from being a
straight sprint from start to end.

I like the concepts in the story, particularly the Neanderthal still living amongst us.
Englin has come up with a storyline so bold that it is a surprise it hasn't been done before.

I was confused as to who the main character is: Darius or Turner.
For my mind it is Turner, although he enters later inthe book. Even
so, I liked Darius's longing for his maiden princess on the
turret.

The writing, at least earlier on, is very succinct for what I expect in a
book but gets into a rhythm as it goes on. The author appears to have a lot of ideas to get out
and a degree of knowledge about non-government warfare.

Overall I enjoyed it and am looking forwards to reading Englin's second work: Ghost of an Executioner.

Interesting but unprofessional 3 Star Review
2006-05-23 - The loud colors on the back cover drown out the description, the typos are many, the paragraphs are oddly short, is poorly packaged and looks terribly unprofessional. I expected it to love it since I love the supernatural, but I don't know if I'll make it through the entire book. I am still in the first few chapters and am mostly confused. It is rough going. The premise is great though -- I'd love to see something like it done by an accomplished writer by Anne Rice, Stephen King or Dean Koontz. I give it 3 stars because I find it hard to get books with this type of subject matter. Maybe if she went over it with a good editor and worked out the story line a bit... I'd be willing buy it again! For now, if you must have it, try finding it used. In fact, if you want mine ...

Riveting read! 5 Star Review
2006-03-09 - This is a great read! I couldn't put it down. The author demonstrates a new and exciting writing style. The odd grammatical glitch and typo were easy to ignore.

It starts unhurriedly, and then accelerates to become a fast, action thriller with the added bonus of first-rate character development and just the right balance of the supernatural.

The plot is deftly fashioned and crammed with action. The author's mastery of technical detail demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of demonic myth, medicine, psychology, modern communication systems and weaponry - just to name a few!

Best book of this genre this year!

I look forward to the next book: hopefully a sequel.

Gripping Thriller with a Supernatural Twist 5 Star Review
2006-03-09 - A taut, suspenseful thriller, with a supernatural twist.
The plot is wonderfully convoluted and skilfully crafted.
The author manages to convey a variety of technical fields and their associated information, without it becoming tedious.
The unique characters are skilfully drawn, the dialogue crackles.
The haunting storyline will not be forgotten.
Highly recommended!

Great first novel 4 Star Review
2006-02-23 - I struggled with an excessive use of adjectives in first few chapters but am very glad I persevered. It smoothes out to a fast paced thriller, with the characters developing better than many well known thriller authors. Dr Englin either doesn't know about cliches or chooses to avoid them and the result is a refreshing take on the dark thriller. The ending raises more questions than it answers but is a fitting conclusion. I'm looking forward to the next book.
