Editorial Review:
As Incubus themselves note about Epic's 2000 rerelease of 1996's Fungus Amongus: "The recording's are basically a snapshot of our band, circa 1993-1995. As even the most discriminating ear could deduce, [we were] still struggling to find our feet." It's a caveat not really necessary for Incubus fans, of which there are now many, thanks to their diverse, unique, and thoughtful brand of funky, sometimes-acoustic rock, exemplified on 1999's impressive Make Yourself. This early effort, written and recorded when band members were in their teens, smacks heavily of Primus and Faith No More fanaticism, influences which, on later discs, are blended into an evolving signature sound. Songs such as "Speak Free," "Trouble in 421," and the aggressive, linear "The Answer" are decent, but not as heavy, well-written, or thoughtful as the material on Make Yourself. Ultimately, Fungus Amongus is a lightweight, casual, fun, and funky morsel for hardcore fans. --Katherine Turman
Fungus Amongus Reviews:
THIS IS NOT FOR MTV INCUBUS LOVERS
2009-12-10 - When I first heard this album in the summer of 2000, just after I had heard the phenomenal S.C.I.E.N.C.E., I had a soundtrack to my summer of fun...girls, skating, pot smoking, music, graffiti and the water. Just today, 9 years later, at age 24, I still dig this album. While my musical palate has expanded generously (always an old school hip-hop fan, sublime, Incubus, 311 now to James Brown soul/funk, Latin Jazz, Modern Jazz, Classic Rock, etc.)this remains fond in my memory. So I sit and read these reviews of "TRUE INCUBUS FANS"...you are all bull****! This is early, authentic, "we wanna jam" Incubus, not that p**** MTV supported crap. Some of the reviews are from people who heard Make Yourself and Morning View, then decided to check out their earlier albums looking for something of the same nature. Boy you guys were sorely wrong. After hearing Fungus Amongus and S.C.I.E.N.C.E. i loved this band, until Make Yourself came out, which was ok, but not what I was used to. Then came Morning View and I have since stopped giving their albums a chance. I am a fan of this old school stuff, you people don't appreciate the fact that it's old and they tried, more than any of us could say. Don't complain about the sound quality of the album, they were teenagers and they gave it a shot, what do you expect to get before you sell yourself out and let the MTV fans decide what style you are gonna become. F-you to the people who hate this album, big ups to the REAL ORIGINAL INCUBUS FANS, pre-Make Yourself.
Good Seller/Bad Item
2009-11-05 - Two of the songs were scratched. The buyer responded within a couple of days and told my I could send it back for a refund. He also let me know when he recieved it and that I should have my refund back within the next couple of weeks.
Some good, some not so good...
2009-07-23 - I used to only have Hilikus (which is amazing) in the album so I was expecting much more once I actually got the rest of the songs. Although I was disappointed with most of the songs in this album the music is still very skillful and still incubus. sink beneath the line and hilikus put this album from a 3-star to a 4-star rating.
Possibly the best Incubus album ever??
2008-03-30 - Funk metal at its finest. This record is pure energy all the way through. It's also very fun to listen to. The musicianship is startling, considering that this was written when the band members were still in their teen years. The sweet drumming, groovy bass and super-creative guitar are impressive, with solos and funky instrumental breaks everywhere.
This sounds absolutely nothing like the Incubus most people know and love, but that's not necessarily a bad thing at all. The songs aren't very complex or sophisticated, but most of them are highly entertaining, even if the lyrics can be a little "out there" at times. There's a video for "Take Me to Your Leader" which you can probably find on the internet or one of their DVD's. The silliness there gives you a good idea of what "Fungus Amongus" is all about.
Standout tracks are "Psychopsilocybin," "Trouble in 421," "Hilikus" and "Sink Beneath the Line."
Starting Up
2008-01-18 - This was the music Incubus played before they made it big. Must have for Incubus fans.
