Description of The Number of the Beast:
Throughout the 1980s, a damning generalization held true: British metal was essentially working man's food, loosely descended from biker-meets and Northern pubs; whereas, in the States, it was an outgrowth of stadium rock, which traditionally subordinated substance to spectacle. Plug-ugly and cartoonishly morbid, Iron Maiden were typical of the Brit effort, since they effectively emphasized a driving, no-nonsense approach to the music. Among metal aficionados, this album ranks as one of the defining moments of the entire genre. Of the nine songs here--including Maiden classics like "Run to the Hills" and the title track--only "Gangland" falls flat, though it's immediately overshadowed by "Hallowed Be Thy Name," acknowledged by many as this band's apotheosis. --Andrew McGuire
The Number of the Beast Reviews:
The Most Recognized Maiden Album.
2009-11-13 - This is easily Iron Maiden's most recognized album. Even casuaul fans of metal are familiar with songs like "Run To The Hills" and "The Number of the Beast". At one time I too would have considered this a five star Maiden album, but when you compare this to Maiden's late 80s albums "Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" it falls just a tad short.
Don't get me wrong; this album is great. The first seven Maiden albums are essential. Buy it now!
The Penical of everything METAL
2009-11-09 - Number of the Beast is hallmark in the world of metal. For those of you who are looking for an original BAD A** CD look no further. There isn't a bad track on this album and every song is guaranteed to sever your face with a gut bustin' guitar solo from not one but two very influential guitarist on the metal scene. Iron Maiden is among the forefathers of what we call metal, and Number of the Beast is possibly their best album. If you have the opportunity to buy this album don't pass it by!
Iron Maiden take us to hell!!
2009-11-02 - Maybe the greatest and most famous Iron Maiden CD ever written, in my opinion not comparable to Piece of Mind and Powerslave, but still very enjoying and exciting!!
A must-buy for all!!
Iron Maiden is one of the truest heavy metal bands
2009-08-08 - Iron Maiden's The Number Of The Beast was the first Maiden album to feature the powerful vocals of Bruce Dickinson. This band had good success before Dickinson, but Dickinson's vocals brought them to a whole new level of excellence and success.
The song Invaders is very fast and just rocks. Children Of The Damned is a slower song, while Prisoner rocks at a torrid pace, almost punk-like. The title track is an all-time Maiden classic. Who can forget Dickinson's opening narration where he mentions the number 666, the number of the beast? This song has a great metal melody and a killer guitar solo. Run To The Hills is another Maiden classic with a great melody. It's one of my favorite Maiden songs ever. The ferocious Gangland will rock you. Total Eclipse is a solid metal song, sort of Judas Priest-like. Hallowed Be Thy Name is one of the best songs on the album. Catchy melody, it just rocks, clocking in at 7:10.
Iron Maiden is one of the all-time great true heavy metal bands, right up there with Judas Priest and Metallica. This is one of their best albums. I highly recommend it.
Let him who hath understanding...
2009-07-23 - The awesome `Number of the Beast' was Maiden's true breakthrough album, especially in the United States and it topped the charts in Britain. It featured the Iron Maiden debut of one of heavy metal's most distinctive personalities and voices in Bruce Dickinson. Though Bruce would not be credited with any of the songwriting here, due to issues with his former band Samson, he would eventually become the band's second main tunesmith after Steve Harris. The songs are legendary with three being probably among the most famous songs in heavy rock; "Run to the Hills" the first single and a spirited romp about the plight of the American Indian, the title track, a metal masterpiece which horrified conservatives in America, and "Hallowed Be Thy Name" a true epic about a condemned prisoners last moments. All three tunes have never left Maiden's set list and if it were only for these alone the album would still be considered a classic. However "The Prisoner" (from the TV show), "22 Acacia Avenue" (Charlotte the Harlot revisited) and "Children of the Damned" (which featured Adrian Smith's first composer credit) are all essential and are often played live as well. With `NOTB', the course of Maiden's music slightly changes as the punk influence of the first two LPs was discarded no doubt due to the operatic range of Bruce. Despite the angst of religious groups due to the subject matter and album cover, Maiden became stars in America and solidified their status as one of the biggest bands on the planet. Metal didn't get any better in 1982 than `The Number of the Beast', a true landmark for the genre....white man came from `cross the sea....we gave him hell!
