Girls Hold up This World Reviews: What a bunch of drivel! 2009-12-29 - Come on now! The key to empowering young girls is to fill a book with trite, empty, (but very PC) statements such as, "We girls hold up this world as we build our self-esteem," and "We are a new generation of girls. We will make this world better..."? Did Pinkett-Smith even write this book or does her name on the cover represent the whole of her involvement in this watered-down soliloquy? I am sick of folks who feel that the most valuable lesson to teach children is, "Feel good about yourself." What in the world do you have to feel good about? That you're a girl? I hate to break it to you, but you didn't have any say in that!
What about focusing on things that are under one's control? One's accomplishments? Efforts? The challenges that a person overcame, be they male OR female? Ah, but that would take effort and it could get messy. Better to write something easy, package it nicely, then watch it sell, sell sell!
It seems as if this book was written in a day. Make that, half a day. A few hours? Such claptrap.
Instead of feeling good about being a girl or a boy, old or young, tall or short, or whatever...rather than fretting over self-esteem and whether "showing our softer side" either does or doesn't translate into "weakness," why not go out and accomplish something useful instead?
Disappointed in shipping 2009-01-19 - The book, itself, is perfect and was delivered in new condition. I was very disappointed in Amazon's shipping. This book was a gift and was guaranteed delivery by Christmas; however, it did not arrive until Dec. 29. Amazon's customer service was helpful though.
I loved this book! 2008-01-28 - I am a dark skinned mother and am very aware, having biracial children, of the images they are exposed to. There is a picture of at least one dark skinned girl in the book that I can think of off the top of my head. There is a young beautiful dark skinned preteen listening and dancing to her music. I love the fact that this book shows girls and women of all shades.
Good book for Little Girls 2007-12-04 - This book is a good book for little girls. I wish I had some like this when I was growing up. The content is not magnificent and the themes are one dimensional, but this is what makes it so great. The simplicity of saying that we, as minority women, are beautiful and are sisters with all women because without us, there could be no world.
To a girl, that's saying a lot!
The pictures are very nice as well.
Girls Hold Up the World 2007-10-30 - This is one of the best books for "all" girls no matter what age. I am giving this book to every female in my family and some of my best friends. I mark the page(s) that exemplify the character of each individual and write a special note in the inside cover. Every page has an inspiring message. THIS IS A GREAT, GREAT BOOK!!
