Editorial Review:
Jack Bourdain had it all but messed it up going wild. Four years later, he ends up with a crappy job in Pizza Chain. Then, he gets an offer to get back in the game as the chef of a famous restaurant.
Description of Kitchen Confidential - The Complete Series:
Having been described as "wicked" and "debauched," Anthony Bourdain's culinary memoir was bound to be a tough sell for network TV. In Kitchen Confidential's sitcom incarnation, dark-haired Anthony becomes blond, blue-eyed Jack (Bradley Cooper). In the pilot, the recovering alcoholic moves from a pizzeria to a brasserie. The catch is that he has to hire a staff in 48 hours, so he turns to pastry expert Seth (Nicholas Brendon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), seafood genius Teddy (John Cho, Smiley Face), and sous-chef Steven (Owain Yeoman). He also inherits kitchen worker Jim (John Francis Daley, Freaks and Geeks). In reality, Bourdain ran the shop at New York's celebrated Les Halles. In the show, Jack oversees the kitchen at the fictional Nolita. Pino (Frank Langella, terrific as usual) manages the joint, while the wait staff includes his tightly-wound daughter, Mimi (Bonnie Somerville, NYPD Blue) and the bubble-headed Tanya (Jaime King, Pearl Harbor). As in producer Darren Star's Sex and the City, the central character narrates, there's no laugh track, and more of the comedy revolves around sex than work.
While Cooper (The Wedding Crashers) isn't the most obvious choice to play Bourdain--and although Kitchen Confidential would've made more sense on cable--he does a surprisingly credible job, even if the writing lets him down on occasion. Realistic or not, severed fingers and singed eyebrows tend to play better in print than on the screen. Of the 13 episodes produced, FOX only aired four (back-to-back with Arrested Development), which is a shame as it was just starting to hit its stride. Guest stars include Bitty Schram ("Exile on Main Street"), John Larroquette ("Dinner Date with Death"), and Cooper's Alias co-star Michael Vartan ("French Fight"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Kitchen Confidential - The Complete Series Reviews:
Kitchen Confidential is hilarious and it arrived so quickly!!
2009-11-09 - I live out in Hawaii and I ordered this DVD for my boyfriend's birthday a little later than planned. I was worried it wouldn't arrive on time since we usually have to wait a bit longer for mail from the mainland to get here. It arrived in half the time than what was quoted and it's hilarious, such a pleasant surprise! I'm just sad they didn't do a second season. Two thumbs up.
love this show
2009-09-13 - This is one of the best show I have ever seen; I laugh out loud every episode! I don't know how you can tell a show is a failure after 3 eposides! I was very disappointed when this was cancelled and am so happy now that I can watch it anytime I want 8-)
Too bad it got cancelled!!
2009-09-02 - I had not heard much about this show apart that it was created by Darren Star and starred Bradley Cooper. I was pleasantly surprised. It is funny, edgy (for a network show), sexy and it makes you want to go to Nolita restaurant to eat one of Jack Bourdain's culinary creations.
The only little improvement that could be made...MORE EXTRA FEATURES!
Enjoy this show!
A feast....
2009-04-06 - I just cannot believe that this show was canceled after the first 4 episodes were shown on TV. It is very rare that a tv series hits its stride from the very first show. Kitchen Confidential did this and more....
The cast is simply amazing. I have not seen such great group chemistry in a long time. They are all excellent. Bradley Cooper seems to have been made for this part, even though he has this quality about him that just shines through, whatever role he's playing (we first saw this on Alias).
The writing is superb. The timing of the lines is right on. There is no laugh track.... I could just go on and on.
I am amazed and saddened that one of the cable networks did not pick this one up. I am sure that if it had been featured on HBO, this series would have had a long life.
Buy this season, and don't be too sad when you watch the last episode.
Faultless sitcom
2009-02-05 - This is one of my favourite TV shows and possibly my favourite sitcom. It's got everything - intelligence & wit, originality, and is very well acted by some very attractive people.
Every time I watch it I get disappointed by the fact that theres only one series.
