Editorial Review:
One day the people who live with Elmer, who was a little elf, baked a blueberry pie. The minute Elmer had a chance he jumped right into that rich, melting pie and ate till his elfin stomach bulged. It was delicious, and Elmer wanted another one right away. But nobody can see an elf, or hear an elf, or feel an elf, so none of his people knew he was trying to tell them something.
Then, when Elmer was unhappily sampling cherry pie, he had an inspiration! But, dear reader, we can't give the ending away. Let's just say that Elmer's ingenious solution satisfied his craving for blueberry pie and, being a polite elf, he thanked his people.
Elmer has been the most appealing and industrious elf around for nearly fifty years, and he'll continue to delight children for generations to come. Seymour Fleishman's charming illustrations transform our familiar household world into the tiny world of elves.
Blueberry Pie Elf Reviews:
Blueberry Pie Elf is WONDERFUL!
2009-09-24 - This was my favorite book as a child. It got too expensive to buy a copy because it was out of print and apparently lots of people's favorite book! But now that it's reprinted, I am happy to get a new copy that has the exact same illustrations and even the same dust jacket as the original! Perfect!
It's the story of a sweet elf who lives with a family and does things to help them, but since no one can see an elf and no one can hear an elf, they don't know it. Then they make a wonderful blueberry pie that he samples, and he is so happy! But after that, no more blueberry pie. He does lots of things to try and get them to make a blueberry pie, but nothing helps until...read it and see!
Adorable vintage illustrations and good manners taught to children with humor and fun on every page.

fun imaginary tale for kids
2009-08-21 - My favorite as a child. Every week I would take it back to the library and every week I would check it back out. Eventually I expanded my book choices but I have to say that my early love of reading was sparked by an impish invisible, blueberry lovin' elf with a conscience.
Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star Review
2009-04-19 - Did you know that elves may like one kind of pie and not another? Elmer is a little elf who lives with a human family. Of course, no one knows that he is there because no one can see an elf, and no one can hear an elf, and no one can feel an elf. One day the family makes a blueberry pie, and when Elmer tastes what is left over, he jumps right in and eats until his elfin stomach bulges. He wants another one right away, but he has no way of letting the family know. He does not like apple pie. He does not like pumpkin pie. He does not like cherry pie. But the cherry pie gives him an idea. Will he ever find a way to tell the people that he wants blueberry pie? And will they make him one?
This book, originally published in 1961 by Jane Thayer, the pen name of Catherine Woolly, is representative of the high quality stories that were written for young children in the 1940s, 50s, and early 60's. It is a shame that so many of them have been forgotten, and we can be thankful to Purple House Press for making several of them available again for the delight of youngsters today. Not only is The Blueberry Pie Elf a fun read, but it also exemplifies the importance of being helpful, expressing thanks, and in general having good manners. Seymour Fleishman's muted but picturesque illustrations add so much to the action. Kids of all ages, and the adults who read to them, will really enjoy this wonderful book.
An old and sweet story
2009-02-05 - This used to be one of my favorite books as a child, but as I grew older my mom passed it on to my younger cousins. Every now and then I searched online to see if I could find it, but the only edition available had a new illustrator and I wanted the one I remembered. I'm so glad they decided to re-publish it. This is a story about Elmer, an elf, who lives with a family and is thrilled when he tastes a bit of their blueberry pie one night. He does all sorts of chores to help them out around the house, hoping they'll notice they have an elf around, and in the end figures out an ingenious way to let them know what he wants. The pictures are enchanting and it's a fun story.
