Gus and the Baby Ghost Reviews: The Fourth Book in the Gus Series? 2009-07-21 - Near as I can tell, this is the fourth in the Gus series, following "Gus is a Friendly Ghost," "What's a Ghost Going to Do?," and "Gus was a Christmas Ghost." (The latter I've not read, and can't be entirely sure, please feel free to correct me :)
This is also my absolute favorite in the series, and the first Gus book we stumbled upon.
Gus, Cora the cat, a mouse named Mouse, and Mr. Frizzle all live in the Historical Museum. They have a fairly symbiotic relationship, until the arrival of this baby ghost that is left on the doorstep. Frizzle who has a terrible temper and is reminiscent of most bad-tempered excessively rigid old men overreacts a number of times in most theatrical and entertaining ways before the mild-mannered Gus stands his ground, puts Frizzle in his place, and restores order to the emotional state of the household.
The whole book is comical throughout. The language is fun to read, and my daughter can attest to how fun it is to repeat ad nauseum. She likes to run around saying "Keep that kid quiet!" in a Frizzlesque tone.
There are a lot of books in our house that, after reading them 20 times, we groan at the thought of reading it again. Sometimes we slide a book behind the couch for a week or so just to avoid the horror. This IS NOT one of those books.
After a year plus of reading this one relatively often, I'm still pleased when my daughter brings it over. It's just that darned enjoyable.
If you can find this book buy it! 2002-07-29 - Jane Thayer is an author whose themes of common decency, innocence, love and respect, predate the politically motivated themes so prevalent in todays youth literature. The are honest, warm, and lovable books that are a timeless treasure to any generation.
Gus and the Baby Ghost 2000-03-31 - This is a great book. Does not scare little kids. My four year old loved it.
