Editorial Review:
Since the release of her 1986 groundbreaking album Control, Janet Jackson has done just that by taking control of her career. Her groundbreaking musical style, compelling music videos and show stopping performances have impacted the world, making her an international iconic superstar. Janet's new album 20 Y.O. is the celebration of her 20 years since taking control and shows why she remains a staple in mainstream popular music.
Note: Initial run of 20 Y.O. includes 4 different covers designed by contest winners.
Description of 20 Y.O.:
Janet Jackson opens her much-hyped, post-wardrobe-malfunction return to the studio with the following proclamation: "I've covered a lot in my 20 years, and I've uncovered a lot in my 20 years." There's a pause, then a giggle. And then comes an honest breakdown of this disc's DNA: "I want to have fun," chimes Janet (or J., or Miss Jackson if you're nasty and can remember that far back). Fun, then, is what we get. With a light heart, a light vocal touch, and no shortage of quips and unstaged-sounding between-song cut-ups, Janet and her Jermaine Dupri-helmed posse pull together a Sunday afternoon picnic of a disc: "Enjoy," among 20 Y.O.'s standouts, hauls in a kids' choir to reinforce the keep-it-simple, spirits-skyward vibe; "So Excited" reaches back to Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" for a subtle retro reference point; "Show Me" and "Do It 2 Me" buzz along to infectious midtempo sound melanges; and "This Body" is a heavy breather reminiscent of Damita Jo's likable smut. Nelly puts in a house call for "Call on Me," another easy-beezy standout and 20 Y.O.'s nod to name-dropping, but overall it's easiest to praise this fresh and frolicsome disc for what it does without--in a break from current pop customs, nothing's twitchy or trying too hard. -- Tammy La Gorce

20 Y.O. Reviews:
*Celebrating Janet's 20 Years*
2009-09-27 - While some artists have come and gone, Janet Jackson has achieved a lot in her 20 years thus making a mark that her success and rise to the top have been truly smashing and grand! "20 Y.O." is a celebration of all that she has covered in her 20 years; It's about having fun, not being serious, and just feeling great! From start to finish the album has touches of class, details, and striking surprises!
Not only did this album have the lyrics, beautiful disc artwork, and greetings to God, Jermaine Dupri, and her adoring fans, but she had numerous photo covers done for the same album. Janet wanted to capture the different looks throughout her career. All the different photos were collected from major photographers. Amazon surprisingly sent me a striking album cover that was done by the contest winner designer Nicole Marie Clark! But aside the cover, the contents are what made this even more of an epitome of the ICONIC image she is!
There are some excellent dance tracks that will create party vibes sure to make one dance, feel energized, or just feel positive and uplifted! While the album could have taken this dance route all the way and perhaps made a stronger mark to some, it was nonetheless fabulous to enjoy for its variation! Aside the dance tracks, there are slower jams carrying more mellow vibes creating vast emotions all positive and meaningful! The tempos have booming blends adding a more R&B touch! Her vocals are soft, sensual, and pleasant in sound. From my tastes, every song had something special to offer! Enjoy the varying styles and feel invigorated, energized, and in the mood to dance, relax, or get ready to unwind with that special someone!
Terribly Disappointing
2009-04-24 - It's difficult to even review this album, since nearly all of the tracks run together. At its best, as on the Jam & Lewis assisted "Daybreak," 20 Y.O. is a mediocre tribute to Janet's past material; at its worst, as on nearly all of the Jermaine Dupri-produced tracks (i.e. "So Excited"), the album is practically unlistenable. Janet, who gives us the same tired, sexed-up lyrics ("This Body"), gets lost in bland hip-hop beats ("Show Me"); what result are tracks that sound like outtakes from any of her host of current imitators. Once, Janet challenged herself and her listeners with trailblazing concept albums; now, she simply settles for the sound du jour, proving only that many other artists can do it better. Why does Janet continue to muddy the waters of a formerly great career with these half-baked records? 1 Star.
A mixed Bag as well...
2009-03-19 - I didn't know she even came out with this cd, I remember when Call on Me came out and your heard about it for a week and then it pretty much disappeared! At first I was really surprised how strong and great the the album was. I used to play it on my ipod all the time, but then it eventually wore off and got really lackluster. To me this is better then her previous album, but it's still not that great. I thought some her song choices sucked... Call on me was ok... Do it to me was really execellent(hot beats!).Get it Out me was pretty good as well. There's some crappy material and some good material. It's a mixed bag overall. If you like Neyo or rihanna's latest cd's then this def. the album for you to get. I would recommend this to any pop music fan or r & b you can get your use out of it!
a mixed bag...
2009-01-16 - This album was supposed to be a celebration of janet and her longevity, but it's a bit of a dud. She didn't really step up her game on this one. It could be due to her feeling pressure regarding the slight commercial letdown of her damita jo, but the passion just isn't in most of the tracks. It seems to me that the whole goal of this album was simply to bring Janet back, and bringing in JD to sort of duplicate the success he had bringing back Mariah Carey. It didn't seem to be about making a classic janet album as it was about simply bringing her back into her position as respected pop star. Janet seems content to simply coast on the forgettable hip hop pop that is popular. Janet had made it this far by making her own trends, not following the trends of others. For that reason, this album is a disappointment, though there is still a fair amount of good stuff on here. With U and Take Care for example, total classic slow jams that only Janet can do so well. Those few tracks make this album worthwhile. The dance portion isn't that memorable with the exception of This body, which would have been a hit had she had the cojones to release it. All in all, a decent effort but I'm still waiting for Janet to bring it like you know she can. Janet has been the icon that other women in the game follow and imitate. But in this case, Janet is the one watching and imitating. That's so wrong and she has to do better, even if her slight imitations are better than her peers. It's not the way she should be celebrating her 20 years.
Enjoy??
2008-09-12 - NOT my favourite Janet jackson album. there's only a couple of songs I like and the rest of the songs are just average at best. I like "with u", "get it out me" "enjoy" and uh...... I can't remember any more that's how memorable this cd is! The song with nelly "call on me" is a plain jane track and was janet's attempt at trying to make a hit record. Good try miss janet. And of course, this cd is littered with those weird intros and interludes. I wish someone would tell janet to just stop already with the madness. another reason I don't like this cd is because of the cover. I accidentilly picked the worst design (the one with the janet sillouette). it looks cheap, like something you could make on your computer and print out. This is still Janet and I love her music, but this has got to be her worst record.
