Damita Jo Reviews:
Damita Jo is great!!!
2004-04-06 - OK- here we go-
First off- the interludes are complete junk. This is the first album where I hate the interludes. On janet. and TVR they are SO much better. The only two that I can stand are Magic Hour and Country.
Damita Jo- 8/10; I like the beats and the lyrics. Would like it to be a verse longer, but really like it overall. I think it is a great first track. I find it odd that she speaks part of these lyrics later on t he album and ends with a "thank you" but not at the end of the album. That interlude part should def be the last thing on the album!
Sexhibition- 10/10; I LOVE this one. Great beats, love the play on words. Rock feel to it makes it different from other tracks.
Strawberry Bounce- 9/10; has some great lyrics, like the Jay-z sample and its done well, but a little more from Jigga would have been cool. Maybe on a remix?
My Baby- 7/10; why so many reviewers mention this one as a standout is beyond me. I like it ok, but I expected something better out of Kanye on both his rap and the production. I don't think his guy is half the producer he's touted as at the moment. It has an easy vibe, so I like having this one on when driving.
Spending Time with You- 5/10; filler. I really liked this song the first few times I heard it. But I could do without this one now that I've heard the whole album. I usually skip it.
Island Life- 10/10; I love this song! It's perfect for playing while driving with the top down on a beautiful Texas day! The chorus vocals are a bit high and I'm not thrilled about the "echo" lyrics, but I still love it! I think this is my 3rd overall favorite track.
All Nite (Don't Stop)- 10/10; from the opening line "this is sick" this track is pure fire! It's got awesome lyrics, great beat, and the choreography J's done with this so far is stellar! I wish the bass was heavier, but that can always be turned up. I suggest you crank up the volume and jam!
R&B Junkie- 10/10; fun dance song, great beats, fun lyrics, def makes me want to get up and shake my groove thang! This is my 2nd overall favorite track on the album!
I Want You- 9/10; great vocals, love the live versions J's done on TV, a very solid song.
Like You Don't Love Me- 10/10; my very favorite track on DJ, I have to play this one at least twice in a row. The lyrics are great, I like the overall concept of the song. I think this would be a great single!! Not sure if this is a Dallas Austin track, but it sounds like one.
Thinkin' About My Ex- 8/10; Beautiful song, the lyrics are fantastic. I like the concept and J does it very well. Very solid song.
Warmth- 5/10; I'm not a prude by any stretch, but this gets a low rating b/c J leaves nothing to the imagination. Her delivery doens't make it sound explicit at all (except for one line where her mouth sounds full), and I find myself singing along, but I prefer her other baby-makers to this one. I'm not sure why she felt the need to be this descriptive in a song.
Moist- 8/10; the delivery on this one is incredible. This is explicit like Warmth, but somehow it seems nasty in such a nice way. The line "kissing on my mmmm with ice in your mouth" gets me every time!
Truly- 5/10; filler. I can't stand this song. I liked it the first time, but after hearing whole album I think it should have been left off completely. I skip it every time.
Slolove- 9/10; has a disco vibe, like the beats and the lyrics especially the "huh huh" part, I usually play this one twice in a row. Solid song.
Just a Little While- 10/10; makes no sense to have this at the end of the US edition. Works better on the Japanese track as 2 tracks follow this and it doesn't seem buried at the end. This song is every single bit as good as All For You. Not sure why it didn't take off on US radio (probably b/c Virgin does a terrible job with promotion). The guitar riffs at the start are great, the lyrics are fun, and its got a great dance vibe.
I'm Here (Japanese edition)- 7/10; semi-slow, pretty song. The lyrics are great except when J says "wit chu" instead of "with you." That part annoys me. Nice delivery and overall a good track. I like the concept.
Put Your Hands On- 9/10; can't quite decide the vibe on this; sorta mellow, sorta disco beats. I like the lyrics, except the weird spoken parts- they don't make a lot of sense. But the song always has me groovin' in my seat without me noticing that I'm doing it. it's cool to be shy baby!
Really Disapointed
2004-04-05 - I have been a Janet fan for quite some time, and this was definitely not her best. I have to say that I find that the "genre" of music she chose to introduce on this cd is really almost irritating. I wish she would just go back to the type of music she used to write on her previous cds.
