Description of Timecop:
Pay no attention to the fact that Timecop is an insult to intelligent science fiction, and that it gradually succumbs to an acute case of the sillies. It is a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, after all, so check your brain at the door and enjoy this action flick set in the year 2004. Van Damme plays an officer in the Time Enforcement Police, assigned to prevent criminals from traveling to the past with the intent of altering the future. Ron Silver plays the evil politician who plots to retrieve a stockpile of gold from the Civil War to finance his latest campaign. The film is clever to a point, and entertaining if you can ignore the dumb jokes and inconsistencies. Best of all, it's an above-average vehicle for Van Damme (relatively speaking), who gets to kick some villainous butt and share a few scenes with Mia Sara, who plays the Timecop's wife. As Van Damme fans can tell you, this is one of the action star's better movies. --Jeff Shannon
Timecop Reviews:
second chances at life . . .
2009-08-30 - Peter Hyams futuristic adventure Timecop (1994), is all about time travel and the bending reality. Based on a comic book, the film combines that interesting premise, with special effects, and decent action sequences, producing an entertaining storyline that holds together pretty well, if you are not overly critical.
In a career that has had its ups and downs, this is one of Jean-Claude Van Damme's highlights, starring as Max Walker an agent of the Time Enforcement Commission (TEC). Jean-Claude is in top form physically, and there's plenty of action, and in close fighting featuring his trademark fancy footwork. Ron Silver is Senator Aaron McComb, who is using time travel to raise funds for his presidential bid. While that premise is a bit lame, the time travel aspect allows for some interesting and unexpected twists, turns, and returns. Silver makes a pretty good villain, and Bruce McGill injects humor as Matuzak, the harried head of TEC.
Walker's life is destroyed, when his wife Melissa, played by Mia Sara, is killed in an explosion. Fortunately through the vehicle of time travel, Sara returns for more screen time, and some physically challenging action scenes. Gloria Ruben (ER) plays Walker's new partner, who makes a bad decision, but again because of time travel, also gets a second chance at life. The presence of both ladies, adds much to the enjoyment of the film.
Big things don't make sense, like travelling back to the past in a winged vehicle, arriving there without it, and then somehow returning in the same vehicle. The plot is cartoonish, but still fun. The special effects while somewhat dated, still hold up rather well, and with your brain in neutral, Timecop can be a cool fantasy adventure. Van Damme's acting is often maligned, but his performance here is quite good. What is disappointing is that this release is fullscreen, with no substantial extras besides a trailer. Hopefully a proper widescreen release will come soon.
Why No Widescreen DVD?
2009-07-09 - I own a Video Casette Timecop and ordered a DVD thinking it would be in the same widescreen format as the original video casette--what a disappointment. There are a number of scenes in the original widescreen format that cannot be duplicated in the full screen format which, as I found out, is the ONLY format offered on DVD. This Video company blew it!
One of his better flims
2009-07-09 - VAN DAMME all the way, good fight scene's with good acting...you can watch this over and over it never gets boring..Ron Silver plays his part well..
Timecop
2009-06-23 - This is the cropped or crap version. The top of there heads are cut off. I just didn't like the quality of the dvd. It was frustrating to watch. It's to bad because this is my favorite Van Damme movie.
A Step Above Most Of Van Damme Films
2009-06-02 - I thought this was a notch above the normal no-brainer kick-boxer action flicks which star men like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Segal, Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, etc. because of the interesting and somewhat complex tale with time travel as the main theme. The story also has some good twists and humor.
The special- effects - at least when this came out in the mid '90s - were very cool when the time travelers reached their destinations. The story can be a bit confusing at times but is fun, especially near the end when doubles of all the characters are on the screen at once
The only bad part of the film is the credibility, especially with Ron Silver who plays a politician. No politician, no matter what party or where, would be this much of low-life. In fact, the story is full of unlikable and untrustworthy characters, too many of them. The time travel ange of the story may be intelligent but the dialog in many parts of this movie is just plain dumb and too juvenile.
Yet, overall, this is still one of the best of a small group of well-done Van Damme movies.
P.S. I am not buying a DVD of this until Universal puts this out on widescreen, as it was filmed!
