Editorial Review:
Someone got the rather inspired (but ultimately misguided) idea to match Hong Kong action director Stanley Tong with comedy stalwart Leslie Nielsen in this dimwitted live-action Disney version of the vintage cartoon, in which the very nearsighted tycoon bumbles his way into the heist of a giant, priceless ruby known as the Star of Kuristan. The result is an abundance of slapstick humor related to Mr. Magoo's visual impairment (prompting a brief protest during the film's 1997 release by the National Federation of the Blind), and a tired plot involving a lovely jewel thief (Kelly Lynch) who'll stop at nothing to get her stolen jewel back. Of course, Magoo manages to foil the thieves at every turn, even though he's frequently unaware of his unintentional heroics. This standard family fare from Disney (best suited for kids 12 and under) will probably play better on home video, but you'll have to watch and listen closely for the few gags that really pay off. --Jeff Shannon
Mr. Magoo [Region 2] Reviews:
Another Childhood Favorite!!!
2009-05-29 - Ever since I was a kid, I've loved this movie. It was lost under my bed for a few years, but I finally found it and watched it to refresh my memory. It's very funny about a man named Quincy Magoo who is almost blind is accused of stealing a jewel called the Star of Kuristan. He goes undercover as a bad guy named Ortega Peru to get the jewel back and gets into a bunch of hilarious situations! I highly recommend MR. MAGOO!!!
As dumb as they come
2009-05-06 - But I mean that in a nice way, mostly. The original cartoons were pretty goofy, and this flick hits just about the same level of amusing one-joke monotony. Except for Angus - he gets all the best scenes.
It's kid-safe humor, but without the wit you might hope for. Violence is bloodless and reasonably subdued, and the closest thing to an adult theme is a slight recurrence of "where did my pants go?" humor. Slapstick visual gags carry this movie but, for my taste, the funniest moment was probably the over-earnest disclaimer at the end. Either that or the chicken.

What movie are people watching?
2009-03-18 - I'm not sure who's fault this is, but every Magoo movie that isn't Mr Magoo
(starring Leslie and co.)is getting those reviews attached to them. Right now I am looking at buying DON Quixote and sure enough, there is the review used for the live movie (again). Does anyone edit these things?
Not funny, not funny at all
2009-03-10 - I watched this back in 2000, and I must say that I wasn't amused. The jokers weren't funny, the slapstick was dry, and Leslie Nielsen didn't perform very well as Mr. Magoo. I believe it had lots of potential, but it looks like the screenwriter and director didn't really care for this. Oh well.
Finally! A Leslie Nielsen film I can let my kids watch!
2009-01-21 - I have always been a big fan of LN, his deadpan face and Mr. Magoo style, where no matter how he screws up everything comes up roses.
He IS Mr. Magoo!
But Airplane, Naked Gun, Police Story all had off color humor that I couldn't show in front of the kids.
This was great.
My daughter still talks about the chicken doing the exercise video two years later.
Great slapstick film for dads and kids to enjoy!
