Description of Jack:
Jack is Francis Coppola at his most pointless noodling, looking for the film he wants to make instead of just making it. Robin Williams stars as 10-year-old Jack, a boy with an inexplicable disease that ages him at four times the normal human rate. Kept at home like a contemporary Boo Radley, Jack becomes a neighborhood legend until his parents relent and send him to school. In time, the other kids befriend him and stay loyal as his hyperdevelopment puts a strain on his body and emotions. The idea is sound, but the execution is a bore. The best the script and Coppola can come up with are painfully long scenes in which Williams's character proves himself on the playground and in gross-out contests in a tree house. Coppola fishes around for signs of life and spontaneity in these scenes, but the film is actually best when Jack has to cope with certain feelings in his mature body (such as his attraction to a character played by Fran Drescher) that he isn't prepared for emotionally. Jack would have been a lot better if Coppola had embraced a plan from beginning to end and stuck to it. --Tom Keogh
Jack Reviews:
Robin Williams #1
2008-01-09 - This is another great Williams movie. Could not find in anywhere, except for Amazon. Delivery was fast - as always. Came in great condition too. Been shopping with Amazon for awhile and will continue. They make it easy and fun.
JACK
2007-12-02 - This movie has been a long time coming, it has bought joy to my family members and was a lovely gift idea, i would recommend it, its a great watch
Another Excellent Williams Movie!
2007-09-19 - If you liked Patch Adams you'll like Jack! Excellent emotional, heart-warming, you'll feel sad movie. Story of a child (Jack) with a disease that makes him age about 3 years to 1; so at 10 he looks and internally is 30. It follows his life and all the positives (created by his family) and negatives created by others, he must face. 10 hankie movie.
Jack
2007-07-10 - This is a good movie to instill compassion. We need to be reminded in an optimistic manner that we are not all alike and that each has their own thing to deal with in this life. It is not a free ride but it can be a beautiful ride.
One of my favorite movies!!
2007-06-01 - I remember watching this movie when I was younger (8, 9, 10 years old) and laughing so hard. Robin Williams is hilarious in this movie!
So what's this movie about? Jack is a 10 year old boy that was born with a disease that caused his body to age 4 times faster than normal. Yet, his brain stays the same. In essence, Jack is a typical 10 year old boy in a not so typical 40 year old body. Jack's parents try to keep him away from school and other kids because they fear that the teasing will be too much for him. When Jack begs his parents to go and they finally end up letting him, he unfortunately sees that the other kids don't like kids who look different. Eventually, the kids see that although Jack LOOKS different, he still is a 10 year old kid at heart.
First, the cast is perfect for this movie. I wouldn't have picked Robin Williams to play Jack but, surprisingly, he does a superb job. You may also recognize Fran Drescher and Diane Lane, both giving brilliant performances. Second, talk about a great storyline! It truly pulls you in and allows you to feel the emotions that each of the characters feels (from Jack to his parents to his friends).
Although I wouldn't recommend this movie for younger kids, older kids and adults should LOVE this movie. Not only does it teach a thing or two, it also is a really entertaining movie that will make you laugh and cry; two elements that truly make the perfect movie.
