Editorial Review:
Gregory Nava (Why Do Fools Fall In Love?) directs this more-or-less official film biography of the late Mexican-American singer, Selena Quintanilla Perez (the film is coproduced by her father), which emphasizes sentimentality over conflict and plays down the star's horrific death at the hands of a deranged fan. Jennifer Lopez is quite good as Selena, whose roots we come to know through the story of her father (Edward James Olmos), a Corpus Christi singer who was rejected by white audiences. The script focuses primarily on Selena's inspiring rise, and it tries to muster some sense of urgent conflict over not-particularly-contentious issues (such as her relationship with a guitarist). But Olmos does a fine job portraying the elder Perez as a possessive sort, and the music and general buoyancy of Lopez's performance are infectious. The unavoidable subject of Selena's killer--a woman who happened to be the president of her fan club--is considerably and oddly downplayed. --Tom Keogh
Selena [Region 2] Reviews:
Selena outstanding movie
2009-11-28 - I thought the movie gave viewers like myself an insightful presentation in the life and career of Selena. A good piece of documentary for people who don't live in the Corpus Cristi area. Jennifer Lopez did an outstanding job giving viewers a great profile of Selena. I only wish there was more about the events that led up to her murder, but maybe that's for another time since the story is really about Selena.
Thanks Amazon

hate the music, love the movie
2009-09-28 - Even though I don't like the music of Selena, I loved this movie since it is a genuine film about a singer and her environment in life that came together in a way that rings true of the possibilities of living in America. She was an amazing person and the movie is an inspiration.
i love selena!!!
2009-09-08 - i've seen this movie PLENTY of times. it's just a fun little nice movie that keeps me watching over and over again. throughtout the movie, it takes you through all the good times where selena was still alive when she was starting out and just enjoying her life as she rises to fame and finds true love. they picked jennifer as the perfect person to play her. they both loved to laugh and have curvy, thick bodies. i can't believe that people actually had a problem with jennifer playing selena just because she's of puerto rican descent and selena was of mexican descent. i mean, come on? should it really matter?? their cultures are not really that different. they should be glad that they made a movie to honor her memory. anyways, back to movie....i can't really stand the ending because i get too emotional and choked up. it's like a reminder that she's not hear with us. hearing the "dreaming of you" song is just too sad but it's my favorite. i'm glad they made this movie so everyone can see the kind of personality that selena had. she was all bubbly and full of life. this movie can drew everyone from all walks of life and fall completely in love with her.i also found the movie very funny especially the scene were her dad found out about her wearing the "bustier". classic. the scene where selena and chris makes out is also my favorite and they had john waite's "missing you" playing in the background. i love it. i could just feel the embrace and passion right there.
