Editorial Review:
The good news is, yes, Jennifer Lopez can do comedy. In The Wedding Planner Lopez is Mary, a lovable woman who believes "those who can't do, teach. Those who can't wed, plan!" Her slapstick moments are lighthearted and she is spot-on as the controlling, compulsive-yet-sweet planner. The bad news is Lopez didn't get much of a vehicle in which to test drive her newfound comedic skills.
Mary's life is her career. Planning other people's weddings takes all of her time, leaving no room for a love life of her own. Her only personal life is a Scrabble club, to which she and her father (Alex Rocco, whose wandering Italian accent is painful to listen to) belong. When a handsome young doctor (Matthew McConaughey) saves her from a collision with a runaway dumpster (really, it works), she is instantly wooed by his quiet charm. Too bad he's the fiancé of Mary's biggest client, Fran (played winningly by Bridgette Wilson-Sampras), the job that will launch Mary as a partner in her firm.
The main problem with this film is that no one wants to hurt anyone else's feelings. Everyone is just so gosh-darn nice. In a subplot, Mary's father is trying to arrange her marriage to just the nicest Italian boy. Gee, he's sweet. Golly, Fran is nice. Is there ever a way out of this mess and to leave everyone smiling? Yet, there is a touch of old-fashioned romance to this wholesome film, which can only be described as "cute." And while things may unfold in a predictable manner, The Wedding Planner is still lighthearted fun of the sort that inspires dreamy romantic thoughts. --Jenny Brown
The Wedding Planner [Region 2] Reviews:
Great Movie
2008-04-23 - Awwww, I love this movie. You will definitely laugh through out the movie. J-Lo really does a great job in this movie. Oh and can't forget the handsome Matthew McConaughey! I would recommend this movie to everyone. Even your kids can watch this one!
The Wedding Planner
2008-04-06 - Mary Fiore is the wedding planner extraordinaire. Since she has always been unlucky in love, she decides that those that can't wed - they plan! While crossing the street, her heel becomes lodged in the street grate. As she tries to free it, a dumpster comes loose heading her way. In the nick of time, she is pushed out of the way, but hits her head on the pavement and looses consciousness. When Mary comes to, she finds out that handsome Dr. Steve Edison saved her. Her assistant sets up a date for them that works out very well except when he begins to kiss her it starts to rain. The next time that she sees Dr. Steve is when - surprise surprise - she meets the groom of the current wedding she is planning. Mary vows to remain distant and to plan the best wedding for Fran and Steve, but the heart wants what the heart wants.
This is a very entertaining and heartfelt movie. Jennifer Lopez is wonderful and Matthew McConaughey is sexy and charming. What great chemistry they have on screen!
Interesting twist on the regular romance story
2008-03-09 - This is an interesting romance movie, seeing that the wedding planner ends up with the groom.
It's not my favorite movie but it's worth adding to the collection.
The comedy in it is subtle and that's why I didn't rate it higher.
Ugh
2008-02-14 - This, for me, is one of the worst romantic comedies I've ever seen. Its so mundane and unoriginal and completely not funny. Jennifer Lopez is a one character actor. Honestly. There is no range with her. People pay money to see her films, but really, they are just watching the same movie over and over again. Everyone who watches this movie will know what will happen at the end. Its a given. There is no need for obstacles or pointless drama. Romantic comedies are *almost* all the same. Same characters, same ending. However, what makes this one even more unbearable is the fact that once again, Jennifer Lopez is in it. Even Matt Mcconaughey can't salvage this.
Not that bad...I guess
2008-01-29 - I originally saw this movie in the theater and was just really glad that my date (and not I) was paying of us to see it. Boring, derivative, predictable. The whole premise is bad to begin with. If you're going to make a movie about people behaving badly (or isn't betraying your fiancee any big deal anymore?) then at least have the courage to let them actually behave badly. No, this movie is all tame sexy (she gets drunk and rubs up against him like a cat in heat - he turns her down, (and my memory is fuzzy here) I think because she's drunk, not because of the nice girl he'll be marrying in a few days. Or does she kick him out? Who cares? In real life if the man is on a date with another woman who knows his fiancee, he's certainly not going to turn into a gentleman at the last minute. Everything in this movie is kind of half-hearted and weak, including the acting.
But this movie does get two stars. You know why? Do a web search on either star and look at them for a while. An hour and a half of that is worth at least one star.
