Before Broadway was Disneyfied and Times Square became a mall, the best Broadway musicals were being written for Disney animated features by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman. Their songs for The Little Mermaid created the mold from which their even more popular work (Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin) would be cast. Almost every tune in Mermaid has its (slightly inferior) counterpart in Beauty, for example. But there's no topping the Oscar-winning calypso show-stopper, "Under the Sea"--in which a Caribbean crab convinces you that "Darlin' it's better/Down where it's wetter." Other songs, just as delightful, are even more impressive in the context of the movie. The rapturous "Kiss the Girl" accompanies a scene in which, despite the whispered urgings of creatures all around, the romantic hero does not act on the title's advice! That's the kind of abstract dramatic (OK, comedic) conceit you'd expect from Harold Pinter rather than Disney. And the gruesomely hilarious "Les Poissons" gives us a fisheye view of a kitchen where the seafood chef is a sort of French Ed Gein--a sadistic murderer who brutally tortures and chops up his victims, then eats them! Who says Disney never did black comedy? "...I stuff you with bread/It won't hurt, 'cause you're dead/And you're certainly lucky you are...." Lyricist Ashman may not have been Cole Porter, but he was the next best thing. --Jim Emerson

Little Mermaid Music CD 
2009-08-18 - My daughter was thrilled to get this! She loves the movie and LOVES the songs. I enjoy hearing her sing them from her bedroom. It is great to know I won't have to worry about language, sexual content or gun related content in the music also! HUGE PLUS to me buying this CD.
Rocking Out Under The Sea
2009-05-15 - My newly four year old daughter had a mermaid themed birthday party this year. As one of her gifts, she received Disney's special addition of the LITTLE MERMAID SOUNDTRACK. She loves the music from this movie, and I have to admit, I do, too. This CD was a huge hit at her party.
With this version of the LITTLE MERMAID SOUNDTRACK, you receive two discs. The first is the original soundtrack from the LITTLE MERMAID. This CD contains the entire score with all of those wonderful, memorable, toe-tapping songs. The second CD contains remakes of some of the same songs by some of Disney's current, popular teen artists. Now, while this disc may not be my thing, the four-year olds at my daughter's party loved it. They don't know, and they don't care, who is singing, but the updated, upbeat versions of the songs were perfect for an impromptu dance party. On the spur of the moment, we put 40 air filled balloons on the floor of the family room, cranked up the volume on disc 2, and had a fantastic time watching 13 4-year olds rock out. It was hysterical. The kids had great fun, and the adults laughed so hard, they cried. It was the best party ever, and completely unplanned.
This version of LITTLE MERMAID SOUNDTRACK is a must for any Disney collection. You will love it, your kids will love it, and you can make some wonderful dance memories. RECOMMENDED.
Probably the best soundtrack I own
2009-03-06 - The Little Mermaid came out when I was 3, and it has always been one of my favorite movies. When I found the special edition soundtrack, I was so excited because although I am 22 now, I still love the magic of a Disney score. Alan Menken definitely knows what he is doing! I also liked the new versions on the 2nd disc. I think that the three songs sung by ladies on the bonus disc sound just about the same as the originals, and that is alright with me. I am a big fan of the Jonas Brothers as well, and I enjoyed their remake of "Poor Unfortuante Souls" because it was just enough of the original with the essential JB sound.
Overall, I am really pleased with this album. Long live The Little Mermaid!
