Editorial Review:
Over the past few years, autism has grown at epidemic rates, becoming the leading disorder affecting children in the United States. A school of DAN (Defeat Autism Now) pediatricians have been pioneering therapies and treatments that help reverse the effects of autism, but it can take over six to eight months to get an appointment with a DAN doctor. Now, Dr. Jerry Kartzinel and Jenny McCarthy have put together a book that will give parents all the necessary information about the DAN school of treating autism. Early intervention is the key to a successful recovery, and Dr. Kartzinel shows parents how to make simple changes to their child s environment and diet that are safe and easy to try at home. He also explains some of the more advanced therapies that DAN doctors use, and how to determine whether or not such treatments would benefit your child.
Healing and Preventing Autism: A Complete Guide Reviews:
If your child is not developing as expected... READ THIS BOOK!
2009-12-05 - This book is so informative and is really more broad reaching than just for autistic spectrum children. I think the advice on dietary and supplements and vitamins is also relavant for ADHD as well as other developmental delays. As the caregiver and one who loves your child the most --- DO NOT RELY on DRS -- educate yourself!! You will not regret it! God Bless! God Bless Ms. McCarthy for all she has done and is sharing with the rest of us who do not have limitless funds.
hucksterism
2009-11-26 - Autism, the authors believe, can be cured via dietary supplements of vitamin, minerals and enzymes that they just happen to sell and are heavily marketed and promoted throughout the book.
The book is written in a mock conversational style between the authors, where the author "Jenny" often refers to her "celebrity status" --- what that has to do with the topic of the book I don't know.
As the parent of an autistic child, I think this book is very dangerous. What makes it so dangerous is that it mixes scientifically based information with half-baked ideas or nonsense based on anecdotal evidence, thus implying they have equivalent credibility.
Autism is a complex disorder that probably has multiple causes and is a brain dysfunction. The brain is a complex organ that is both highly sensitive and adaptive. So many of the "cures" may be the result the bodies own ability to heal/adapt itself, much like the spontaneous remission that cancer patients sometimes experience.
Incomplete anti-vaccine agenda
2009-11-26 - The book is well-written and clearly motivated by genuine care. But I am so deeply troubled by the anti-vaccination agenda of the author(s), a theory which has not found scientific validation. In interviews, the author has irresponsibly stated, "I do believe sadly it's going to take some diseases coming back to realize that we need to change and develop vaccines that are safe." This advice to forego vaccinations is not something I would feel comfortable giving a better review for.
Mother of a baby boy wanting to PREVENT AUTISM
2009-11-25 - I feel like I'm the only mom on earth wanting to PREVENT AUTISM. I read every word of this book and think that every parent should read it. There are things I will do differently knowing the risks. For instance thewre is a study showing a 200+% increase of boys who were vaccnated getting autism. This book has encoraged me to keep breastfeeding as a tempory vaccination, encouraged me to wait on vaccinations til he is older and more at risk. I will also never allow vaccinations when my child is sick or allow more than one at a time. I was surprised to learn that people who get vaccinations are not instructed the possible risks (like they are with any other medication). And how on earth are doctors allowing more than one vaccination to be given at once??? there is no study that has looked at combined risks!!! and I learned that some vaccinations have tons odf alluinum!! this is toxic too!! this is a must read!
In no means is this book a complete guide
2009-11-19 - I have two children that have been diagnosed with high functioning autism so this is a very personal matter for our family. We are very fortunate to have a friend who is a PHD/expert/national speaker on the brain. We've also been able to work with a research university regarding high functioning autism.
We would all like easy clear answers for autism. The medical field is definitely lacking clear treatment options for people with autism. What really aggravates me about this book is the strong opinions stated without credible research or evidence to back up their opinions. I would not be surprised after research comes out that some of the opinions in this book detrimental, a waste of time, and resources. We all need to push the envelope and look outside the box for answers. Jenny has approached this problem unconventionally and shared some of her insights. Please don't be fooled that this book is a complete guide. How can it be a complete guide with so much research going on?
If you want to read this book for an alternative perspective go ahead but keep a pound of salt next to you while you read.
