worth a look
2009-03-16 - 'be my guest' is by no means a cinematic pearl, but it is a pleasant and surprisingly entertaining british beat flick with some time-capsule-worthy performances-- the awful title song excepted-- by an interesting cross-section of early-60s pop artists. the throwaway plot revolves around the misadventures of a group of teens attempting to break into the burgeoning brighton music scene, and while there are the requisite silly and now-cliche (think 'hard day's night' subdued) moments one would expect, the film offers a variety of mature, earnest performances (not the least of which comes from a very young david hemmings, soon to become famous with antonioni's 'blow-up') and, more importantly, i think, a real sense of time and place that fans of grittier contemporary fare, such as 'loneliness of the long distance runner,' 'saturday night and sunday morning' and 'billy liar' might appreciate. note: 'be my guest' is the sequel to 'live it up,' made two years prior, which is, at the time of this posting, also out of print.

It's rare that jerry performed in a movie there are only a couple of movies where you can see him! And this is one of 'em.
