2008-08-21 - Apparently, I cannot leave this Jerry Lee Lewis thing alone. I have reviewed several of his CDs and DVDs in this space over the past several months as I have attempted argue for his proper place in the among the founders of rock and roll. This documentary is more in the way of a musical biography interspersing archival musical segments with the story of his life. And what a life. If one rocker epitomized the slogan drug, sex and rock and roll before the 1960's the profile of Jerry Lee Lewis could serve as the model. Many marriages, many drug problems, many setbacks, many run ins with the law many... well, you get the picture. The real reason to get this film though is that early footage, like the Steve Allen Show performance of Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On. Those performances tell the tale. They tell why he could have been `king of the hill'. Hell, he didn't do so badly after all. And he would be the first to tell you that. If you only need Jerry Lee's music there are many good compilations, including an eight CD set that gives everything from the Sun Record period. If you like a little background get this.

2006-10-26 - If you appreciate music this is a must! I have been disappointed by artist that have significant acclaim & put out new music touting it as a master piece. Finally a legend shares his gift. Jerry Lee Lewis DOES NOT let us down.

An Enjoyable Documentary of "THE KILLER"
2006-04-29 - I've enjoyed this entertaining documentary for many years. Jerry Lee's early years and rise to stardom is covered fairly well, but the video races through the later years without covering too many details of that period in his life.
There are rare TV clips and various concert footage to enjoy including classic footage of The Killer's national television debut on the Steve Allen Show in 1957 where he tears into "Whole lotta shakin' going on" like a madman! There are some hilarious and priceless stories told about Lewis too, including an outrageous story of Jerry Lee stopping at a gas station and setting a display of cassette tapes on fire with gasoline after spotting a bootlegged copy of one of his albums for sale!!
The video ends with some outrageous live footage showing an older Killer unleashed in all his wild, flamboyant glory...playing the piano with his feet while standing on top of it to the delight of the audience. There should be a new documentary made that does a better job of covering Jerry Lee's life in greater detail, but "I Am What I Am" is still a must-have for any Jerry Lee Lewis fan!

See other performances such as a BBC appearance performing "Wild One" and the finale song "I am what I am." Excellent! 60 minutes.
