With the blessings of Jimi's biological family and many of his closest friends, Passport brings the life of Jimi Hendrix to light as never before. From his upbringing in Seattle to his final days in London, "Jimi Hendrix The Uncut Story" goes beyond all previously released documentaries to explore the complete life-story behind the legendary artist.
Episode 1: 1942-1961 The first part of this three-episode series takes us through Jimi's life in Seattle, Washington where he spent two-thirds of his twenty-seven years. Through the recollection of his closest friends and family, we enter into the inner world of Jimi's childhood upbringing. This is where we come to know the people and events that would shape his love for music and define the extraordinary man he would become.
Episode 2: 1961 - 1967 After Jimi's stint in the army, we join him as a sideman on the Chitlin' Circuit playing behind some of the greatest names in R&B. After following Jimi to New York, we head off to the UK where Jimi Hendrix became the toast of swinging London virtually overnight. Hear directly from the British rock stars and scenesters who witnessed Jimi's musical coup d'état firsthand. Then follow the Jimi Hendrix Experience on their way to becoming the hottest rock trio on the world stage.
Episode 3: 1967 - 1970 Part three highlights the culmination of Jimi's musical career. It was the peak of the counter-culture era and the world was changing at an incredible pace. Jimi's music and lifestyle were no exception. Here is where we follow Jimi to the height of his creative powers, both in the studio and on the road…only to watch it all come crashing down upon him. Through exclusive interviews, we get the facts behind Jimi's demise and examine the events surrounding his controversial death. But more than that - we come to know the spiritual message behind Jimi's work and celebrate the final stage of his life in music.
Description of Jimi Hendrix - The Uncut Story:
Those looking for historical details, insights, and heartfelt testimonials from family, friends, music industry royalty, and fellow musicians will be greatly satisfied with Jimi Hendrix: The Uncut Story. One would obviously expect a documentary spanning Hendrix's life and career to include the most important facet of the man: his music and him performing that music live. However, The Uncut Story has none of Hendrix's original music. There are loads of great clips of Hendrix's performances, and lots of photos and stock video footage, but none of them are set to Hendrix's music. This is without a doubt the strangest thing about this documentary. The DVD set is not endorsed or authorized by the James Marshall Foundation or Experience Hendrix, LLC, which is probably the reason the music was not allowed to be used. But even so, skeptics should shelve any prejudices that this documentary is not a high-quality representation of the master himself. The content and attention to detail is exceptional. Another impressive aspect of the documentary is the number of songs that are analyzed by friends and family. Lack of music aside and the puzzling fact that the three-hour program is spread over three discs, it may be safe to say Jimi Hendrix: The Uncut Story is one of the best documentaries on the life of Hendrix that has been made. Fans looking for the story behind the music will be pleasantly surprised. --Rob Bracco
Jimi Hendrix - The Uncut Story Reviews:
Not bad considering the so-called Hendrix estate wouldn't let his music be used
2008-08-29 - First, don't buy it. You can search and find free downloads on the net. This is a pretty good documentary. My main problem is the fact that the people being interviewed were not identified. Sure you can tell if it's Pete Townshend or Jeff Beck or Chas Chandler. But some of Jimi's old friends or family members, you have no clue. You have to guess who it is. Same with some of the critics interviewed.
Yes, it would have been nice to have his music and concert footage included, but you can blame the so-called Hendrix estate for that. Jimi would be appalled if he knew his music was controlled by people not even related to him such as his "sister" by marriage. What a joke. His brother is the true heir.
The most detailed of Hendrix Documentaries....
2008-04-27 - I was really surprised to see lack of stellar reviews for this video. I guess not having the endorsement of Experience Hendrix Foundation really does carry a lot of weight. This is by far the most complete and insightful Hendrix documentary I have ever seen. The Experience Hendrix Foundation did not support this documentary so they did not allow his actual music to be a part of this feature. That is a real shame. Many close friends and relatives are interviewed in this film. I found the words of his brother especially insightful when he talks about growing up with Jimi and gives his interpretations to the lyrics of some of Jimi's most heartfelt songs. Not all of Jimi's family life was positive and many details the family would not like to talk about are presented in this documentary. It is no surprise they would not endorse his. At the same time, it comes off as fair and honest and much of the testimony comes from family themselves. I learned more about Hendrix's childhood here than I did from 2 books: 'Scuse Me While I kiss the Sky or Krammer's Experience Hendrix. The evils of Jeffreys is well documented here as well. A very comprehensive narrative of his life as traveling rock star worked to death is given incorporating facts, events or stories I have heard scattered across other sources. Again, I learned a lot of new stuff as well. I give this 5 stars because it is the most complete Hendrix documentary so far. A lot of previous characters from the other documentaries make appearances here but there are a lot of new people as well. Production-wise, these videos are straightforward and would not be fit to air on MTV or cater to attention deficit. These videos are meant to inform and not entertain. I guess this could be another reason for the low ratings. Whatever, I just write this to let you know that this is a must for real Hendrix fans.
I know, I know...it's overpriced
2007-10-18 - Yes it is overpriced, but there are some interesting tidbits on this documentary. I like the music too and hear a lot of people complaining about no music...well, hell, go buy the great music dvds available and quit whining just because you don't like documentaries that much (that shows in some of the ratings, for real). I found the first disk of the three the most interesting, though all three had something to offer. I do think it could have been put on one disk that said part 1, part 2, and part 3.
I was pleased with many of the people who were commenting. The real Hendrix family and people like guitarist John McLaughlin. Someone said it was subjective. I would tell that person that his/hers memories on someone are also subjective. I would also say that most of history is subjective in some way or another. The documentary is not a science as far as I know, so words like subjective should be tossed out on this type of review.
Jimi Hendrix: An Illustrated ExperienceFinally, I sure am glad that Janie wasn't involved with this project and I still don't know why the judge ruled in her favor. If I'm not mistaken, she wasn't even born when Jimi died. Leon, his aunt (who was wonderful in this documentary), and his other blood relatives were involved. Who better to tell a story than those that lived with Jimi or spent time in the studio with him? (and gosh...now Janie has "co-authored" a book about Jimi...talk about subjective and biased...I sure wouldn't pay $45 for it and her having signed some copies is sure no incentive. Who is she and what has she done other than rip off the real Hendrix family and people that performed with Jimi?)
Hold on to your wallet
2005-05-23 - I'll probably keep this movie because I'm a Hendrix fan, but I have a few things I'd like to say about it. First off, don't be fooled into thinking that this movie is any kind of Hendrix experience whatsoever. This is the kind of movie you'd tape off television. Don't be fooled by the clever packaging/ laughable price tag. This was designed to make money. Why else would they split up a three hour movie over three DVDs? It did yield a few interesting things though that I hadn't heard before, and it was cool seeing pictures of him growing up, but NO LIVE PERFORMANCES (or ANY Hendrix music at all... in a THREE hour documentary). For the price of this movie, you could buy Hendrix on the Dick Cavett Show, Jimi Plays Berkeley, and Jimi Hendrix (1973), and have SIX hours of absolutely ASTOUNDING footage (including some fantastic interviews) as opposed to three hours of a VH1-style documentary that is grounded mainly in opinion and speculation rather than in fact (now that I read that it sounds pretty harsh, but trust me... stay away. It even smelled bad when I took it out of the box).
Dont bother!
2004-11-19 - Chances are that you're already a fan of Jimi if you're considering buying this. You'll probably already know when he was born, that he moved to England and that he is dead. Somehow or other this DVD manages to stretch that information into 3 hours! Don't be bamboozled by the fact that there are 3 DVD's in this set, each DVD is only 1 hour long? There is no footage of Jimi in concert or anything of interest musically. I don't understand why they didn't just put all the documentary on one DVD and had a second DVD with him in concert with the Experience and the 3rd DVD with the Band of Gypsy's...now that would be worth buying......this just isn't.
