2009-10-11 - i have the criterion dvd and this blu-ray isnt much different in the video department. audiowise they are both very sweet and hard to choose... but this version has the extra footage as a bonus special featute.. it was fun seeing the show again froma different viewpoint.

the concert is edited slightly different and is mostly the same but i found it refreshing. also included is all the avialble footage of purple haze. can you see me is still missing.

menus are very cool with jimis burning guitar. on criterion you have to switch between otis and hendrix and the menu looks like recycled tree paper. you also have to but the 3 disc version to get some monterey history.. this blu-ray has a small doc on monterey if your interested then you can get criterion version of that.

2009-06-29 - Nobody - I MEAN NO ONE has the soul of Hendrix. All these "Dime a Dozen" songs of today, Nobody could play the guitar like he could. Jimi's a Monster when he played. That is why I play the keyboard now!
...and when he sets his guitar on fire, Mayhem erupted!!

2009-05-01 - I wish there were more quality documents to this amazing time, but they are unfortunately few and far between. Capturing history on film is a rare thing, and capturing it with incredible sound is even more so. This is without a doubt a must see for any Hendrix fan, diehard or casual. The performance is phenomenal, and the picture and sound - especially the sound, are excellent. The film -especially the interviews - is really illuminating for someone like myself who had heard the performance on CD for years, but had not actually seen the entire performance or knew the story behind the Festival. Again, a really amazing document captured here. I don't believe the entire Festival is available yet on BluRay, but when it is I'd love to have it. Of course it might seem anticlimactic since it appears that only a handful of performances could even light a candle to Hendrix.

2008-12-31 - Great sound quality and great performance. Probably Jimi's best performance ever.

I've read the other reviews and understand that the picture quality is not perfect because the performace is over 40 years old and was shot in 4:3 (1.33) and not widescreen. But then what is the advantage of paying for the Blu-ray then ? I'll bet the DVD picture is just as good.

Even so, I gave it 4 stars because of sound quality. And also since the Blu-ray is only a few dollars more than the DVD, go ahead and get the Blu-ray. Just don't set your expectations too high for picture quality.

The extras were good as well. Interviews with the people that set it all up.

2008-12-19 - First although this is BR, there is only so much that can be done with the poor video quality from the sixties. That said this is the best concert footage I've seen of Jimi. I have this on regular DVD as well as BR. Get the BR!
If you're too young to remember the Hendrix sensation, get this DVD and you will understand! Absolutely awesome!
