Editorial Review:
Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his GoodFellas gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal. (It's modeled after on Wiseguy and GoodFellas and Pileggi's true crime book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein's wife. The film is not as fast paced or gripping as Scorsese's earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and GoodFellas), but it's still absorbing. And, hey--it's Scorsese! --Jim Emerson
Casino Reviews:
intense story
2009-10-12 - compelling and tragic story with brilliant script and sharp visuals. was great on blu ray. great acting from Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesch.
Blu Ray....
2009-10-04 - If you saw the film, you know what to expect. The Blu0Ray quality is near perfect! That is all that needs to be said.
Excellent!
2009-08-24 - As soon as the main menu appeared, I instantly realized it was going to be an excellent viewing experience. I am not quite sure how they "restored" it, but they did an absolutely spectacular job. All of the colors were alive and vibrant and made it hard to believe this film was made in 1995. I personally did not see any flaws in the picture, nor encountered any problems during the film.
The audio transfer had no problems either. As far as surround sound goes, dialogue sounded great with background actions whispering from speaker to speaker and when the action and music kicked in, it was the full three hundred and sixty degree audio experience.
About the bonus features, I watched the few deleted scenes and "History Alive: True Crime Authors - Casino With Nicholas Pileggi", which was interesting due to hearing true facts as well as seeing photos and live archived footage about the people the film was based upon.
I used my Sony PlayStation 3 for blu-ray format viewing purposes and did not encounter any problems with the disc, film, or features.
If you are a fan of this film, you will not be disappointed at all with this purchase! Add it to your collection today!
A Must Have!!
2009-07-15 - Worth the extra money for the Blu-Ray Loaded with tons of special features. A great addition to any collection. Many subtitle and language options.
great performances!!!
2009-06-03 - I have to say this is a film that has gotten better with age!!! I think whether you own it on Blu-ray or HD DVD you be very impressed with film transfer in 1080p and the sound very superior to the standard DVD version. This is a must own in your hi-def collection. I wish Warner Bros had taking more in it's transfer of "Goodfellas" like Universal giving us something to love about their HD DVD and Blu-ray's.
