Description of Home Alone (Family Fun Edition) [Blu-ray]:
Now and forever a favorite among kids, this 1990 comedy written by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) and directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire) ushered Macaulay Culkin onto the screen as a troubled 8-year-old who doesn't comfortably mesh with his large family. He's forced to grow a little after being accidentally left behind when his folks and siblings fly off to Paris. A good-looking boy, Culkin lights up the screen during several funny sequences, the most famous of which finds him screaming for joy when he realizes he's unsupervised in his own house. A bit wooden with dialogue, the then-little star's voice could grate on the nerves (especially in long, wise-child passages of pure bromide), but he unquestionably carries the film. Billie Bird and John Candy show up as two of the interesting strangers Culkin's character meets. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are entertainingly cartoonish as thieves, but the ensuing violence once the little hero decides to keep them out of his house is over-the-top. --Tom Keogh
Home Alone (Family Fun Edition) [Blu-ray] Reviews:
I was cheated
2009-11-28 - Yes, I feel cheated. Nowadays, when you buy a dvd labelled "widescreen" you should be getting anamorphic widescreen, not a letterboxed 4:3 image. Anything less than anamorphic and yet still labelled "widescreen" is a ripoff. That includes this DVD.
To add insult to injury, the picture quality of this version is exceptionally poor and has the appearance of having been dubbed directly from an old VHS tape.
I am referring to the Twentieth Century Fox 1999 DVD release in these comments.
Funny... and suprisingly sentimental
2009-11-24 - Believe it not I never saw this film till 2009, as I didn't particularly like that 'Culkin kid'. I must admit that after seeing the movie I understand why it is well liked. It has wicked sight gags, but also is quite sentimental, esp when the disturbingly 'evil' kid, who wreaks havoc with two burglars, can do a psychological 'about-face' and bring an elderly grandfather together with his estranged son. A really nice and funny film worths 5 stars.
home alone review
2009-11-05 - One of my favorite movies, my son (age 5) also enjoys this movie along with Home Alone 2 Lost in New York, he thinks it's hilarious when Kevin fights back the thieves with his painfully funny traps.
Christmas Fun for all the Family
2009-09-21 - I remember I loved this film back when it came out, and I was still relatively young. I don't think I've seen it since, and I must admit to being a bit sceptical when I popped it into the player. Still is good as gold, it turned out! Not sure how much "reviewing" is needed here; has anyone not seen this film? It is one of the biggest hits ever, and more importantly; it was made while the US was still a European nation, which the movie really shows. It is so old there's even a Jewish bad guy, not a blond European one! My oh my!
Even though his family is portrayed as somewhat dysfunctional and strange, it still is a wonderful loving film about the family and what is important in life. Little Kevin has a bit of a fight with his mom over him reacting to his supposed "black sheep" status in the extended family. He says he wishes his family was gone; which *surprise surprise* happens the next morning, when the family leave for France and incidentally forgets to bring little eight-year-old Kevin with them in the chaos (they overslept). It is Christmas, and there's been a lot of burglaries in the neighbourhood, and it turns out thieves are indeed on the prowl. Kevin arms up, though, and places traps throughout the entire house, using his imagination to great effect. All for good comical effect and on the side of it all is the story about a lonely proud old man which Kevin eventually befriends and gives some life-changing advice. Not often something brings tears to my eyes, but there are some wonderful scenes in this film, centring on family and religion; the most important issues in life.
5 stars and a film for all the family that is still as good as it was when it came out.
still a fun movie to watch after all these years
2009-08-10 - i cannot believe it has been almost 19 years since this movie came out. i remember when it first came out and seeing it in theaters. hard to believe i was only 5 years old at the time. still enjoy watching it after all these years. it is a wonderful heartwarming family comedy. i am so happy to have it in my collection and everybody else should have it in there's too.
